Scientist exploring the addicted brain. Traveler. European by heart. Associate Professor @UMN_MDTA @UMN_Psychiatry Formerly @IcahnMountSinai @SinaiBrain
Very proud of this milestone paper by my grad students @GDrossel (first author!) and @LeylaBrucar, who demonstrated a "Cognitive", "Relief" and "Reward" #subtype in #addiction with strikingly different neurobehavioral profiles: https://t.co/IfWbwtXbUm
@UMN_MDTA @UMN_Psychiatry
Excited to share my paper on subtypes in substance use disorder (SUD), in which we describe neurobehavioral profiles of 3 subtypes over 3 domains of function!
My first first-author paper in @AZilverstand’s lab, with @LeylaBrucar, Eric Rawls, and @TimJHendrickson! Briefly,🧵
We used machine learning to understand which social and neurobehavioral risk factors are linked to non-prescribed opioid use in young adults - the top ranked psychological variable predicting opioid use was higher loneliness! @AndreaMMax@UMNews

Happy 2026! I believe this is one of the most important papers that I have ever published, we systematically map the environmental, health and psychological factors underlying early onset of alcohol use in childhood: https://t.co/Ew5J08VEte
with @AndreaMMax@UMN_MDTA
Broadly, we found that positive social relationships are particularly protective for women against alcohol misuse, with prelim evidence suggesting that dysregulated orbitofrontal cortex reactivity may be particularly impactful for men.

Very excited that our paper has been published in Psychological Medicine! We studied sex/gender differences in the roles of social relationship quality, stress, and brain reactivity on alcohol misuse. @AZilverstand@UMNMSTP@UMNeurosci@UMN_MDTA
Thanks to @AZilverstand for the invitation to talk to the Medical Discovery Team on Addiction at the University of Minnesota, and it was a pleasure to finally meet @EkhtiariHamed and @SoleimaniGhazal , as well as the rest of researchers and students.
Introducing Dr. Gunner Drossel @GDrossel !
As proud as I can be - my first graduate student - it has been a pleasure, Gunner! Congratulations!! 🎉
Thanks to @BenSaunders @_janzimmermann_ @UMN_MDTA @UMN_Psychiatry @UMNeurosci

Most exciting: based on 125 reviewed #neuroimaging studies on #drug exposure in rodents the effects of drugs on brain function seem to be dynamic, with the #striatum being upregulated in the first weeks but downregulated later!

My paper, “Neuroimaging of the effects of drug exposure or self-administration in rodents: A systematic review” has been published!
Summarizing results from fMRI & PET across drug classes, experimental design, and method specifics!
