Most scientists from the Global South are not able to afford Open Access (OA). An OA article can equal 3 or 4 of our monthly salaries or the full yearly amount of one of our grants. This discriminatory situation creates a double-standard in science dissemination.

Facts: in 2003, PhD stipend was 25% above NZ minimum wage. In 2021, it's 20% below it + for the first below the training wage. Worth noting than most of current PhD students get less than the Marsden stipend
($27,500 pa + student fees). Extending this to all NZ Uni seems fair😳
