Joyce has a singular ear for sounds. Among other things, he transcribes the sea’s ’vehement breath of waters amid seasnakes, rearing horses, rocks’, and a cat’s meow (‘Mkgnao’). Never appreciated just how aural an experience ULYSSES is.
