CELEBRATING 51 YEARS OF UNCLE Sani Mohammed Maikatanga— A PHOTOGRAPHER PRESERVING NORTHERN NIGERIA’S HERITAGE

Uncle Sani Mohammed Maikatanga, a distinguished photojournalist and visual documentarian, clocks 51 years old today.

I met him in Kano in 2022, where he showed me the countless hard drives containing years of his photographic work documenting the beauty, traditions, people and cultural heritage of Northern Nigeria. Looking through his archive, I realised that this is more than photography—it is a historical record.

Uncle Sani is one of those people we should celebrate not only for his craft, but for the invaluable role he continues to play in documenting Nigeria and preserving its culture for generations yet unborn.

Photography has a unique power: it freezes moments that would otherwise disappear with time. In the next 50 to 100 years, many of his photographs will become important reference points for researchers, historians, academics and future generations seeking to understand what Northern Nigeria looked like, how its people lived, and the traditions that shaped the region.

His camera is not merely capturing pictures; it is building an archive of our collective memory.

Happy 51st birthday, Uncle Sani Mohammed Maikatanga. May you continue to document, preserve and tell the story of Northern Nigeria through your remarkable lens.
