Last week, a federal court struck down the Department of Education's rule restricting eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
We’re thrilled that the court ruled that the Department of Education must follow through on the bipartisan promise of loan forgiveness for the millions of teachers, military personnel and other public servants who have dedicated their lives to making our country a better place.
We're proud to have brought this case with @Public_Citizen on behalf of @Kennedy_HRC, @immcouncil, @Door_NYC, and @LULAC to protect the millions of public servants who rely on PSLF.

New from @APNews: The Department of Education’s rule that would restrict eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program has been struck down.
The rule would’ve allowed the administration to deny loan forgiveness to public servants working at organizations it disagrees with politically. This is a major victory for student loan borrowers across the country.
“Public servants should not have to worry that the federal government will punish them because of their employer’s mission or perceived political views.” — Aaron Ament, Student Defense President

The PSLF program was created as a promise from the United States government to its citizens: if you give back to America, America will give back to you.
Today, a federal court upheld that promise. The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the Department of Education’s proposed rule to restrict eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program is unlawful.
The ruling was in response to our lawsuit filed last November with @Public_Citizen on behalf of @Kennedy_HRC, @immcouncil, @Door_NYC, and @LULAC.
We are proud our lawsuit helped protect PSLF and the millions of public servants who rely on it.

In new reporting from @insidehighered, Colleen Flaherty featured Student Defense’s Student AI Bill of Rights and spoke with SHAPE AI Advisory Committee Member Saanvi Arora about how students are navigating AI on campus.
As colleges rapidly adopt AI across many aspects of the student experience, Saanvi emphasized the importance of clear expectations and “meeting students where they’re at.”
This focus on transparency and student-centered policies is reflected in Student Defense’s Student AI Bill of Rights, which aims to protect students as colleges and universities integrate AI.

THE TURNAROUND | Three months ago, Louisville didn't have a pro football team. Today, it has a finalist. The Louisville Kings are headed to the United Bowl after a 29-20 playoff win at St. Louis. Quick story: https://t.co/pkJEY1DxTw
NEW: Student Defense sued the Department of Education for failing to release records on its use of AI in rulemaking and in the Federal Student Aid Ombudsman’s office.
Student Defense submitted five FOIA requests earlier this year, which federal agencies are required by law to respond to within 20 business days. Yet three months later, ED has still not responded.
“AI is becoming increasingly embedded in everyday life, and the public has the right to understand how the Department of Education is using these tools. Instead, the agency is stonewalling our requests, leaving students and borrowers in the dark about whether and how AI is influencing the development of higher education policies.” — @dan_zibel, Chief Counsel and Vice President of Student Defense.
WATCH: As colleges explore the use of AI in admissions, @szearfos, Dean of Admissions at University of Michigan Law School, says that transparency and oversight remain critical:
“AI can be a really powerful tool to help us hone what we’re doing, but it absolutely has to be used carefully, and it absolutely has to be disclosed that you’re using it.”

NEW: A federal judge denied the Trump Administration's motion to dismiss our lawsuit challenging the dismantling of the Department of Education.
@NEAToday President Becky Pringle responded to the ruling: “We are pleased that the court rejected the government’s attempt to dismiss this case and allowed our challenge to move forward. Last week’s decision allows for the case to proceed and hold the administration to account for its unlawful efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.”
We’re proud to be fighting alongside @NEAtoday, @NAACP, and @AFSCME to protect students and families across the country.

This week, we filed a reply brief in our lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s PSLF rule.
The proposed rule lets the administration deny relief to public servants working at organizations it disagrees with.
We will keep fighting against this unlawful rule to protect our public servants and to ensure that PSLF cannot be used as a political weapon.

NEW: We just filed a final brief in our lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s PSLF rule.
In the brief, we argue that ED can’t replace a clear law with a vague, politicized rule that allows the government to deny relief to public servants based on where they work.
We are proud to represent the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center, the American Immigration Council, The Door - A Center of Alternatives, Inc., and the League of United Latin American Citizens in this case.

NEW: We just announced an investigation into the Trump Administration’s use of AI and its impact on students. We’ve filed 12 FOIAs (Freedom of Information Act) and we’re working with Congressional oversight staff to reveal how AI tools are being used for federal student aid programs.
More than 42 million Americans have federal student loan debt, totaling over $1.6 billion. It’s the government’s job to protect students’ data and help borrowers navigate their loans. The Administration’s actions raise serious questions about whether core federal functions are being secretly outsourced to AI without safeguards or oversight.
As part of this investigation, we’re launching a new tipline for federal employees and contractors to privately share how the federal government is using AI. If you have information, submit it to our contact form at: https://t.co/RzYdMOMzlG and select “Government Use of AI.”

NEW: We just filed a Motion for Class Certification on behalf of former students in their case against Grand Canyon University’s affiliate, Grand Canyon Education, Inc. (GCE). The students say that GCE knowingly lied about tuition costs, hiding that most doctoral students would pay thousands more than advertised.
The stakes are high: From 2022–2024, GCU disbursed more Title IV Direct Loans than any other institution — over $1 billion annually.
