The utter irony of Putin and Trump meeting soon in Budapest to jointly seal Ukraine’s fate should not be lost on anybody. This is the very same city where the US, the UK, and Russia came together 31 years ago to give Ukraine ironclad assurances that its territorial integrity would be respected and protected within existing borders in exchange for giving up a third of the world’s nuclear weapons (to Russia!). Ukraine trusted the US, trusted the UK, transferred all its nuclear weapons to Russia, and joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Within 20 years, Putin effectively ripped up the Budapest Memorandum, ignored Russia’s pledge, and invaded and annexed Crimea. In 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine finally removed all remaining doubts about Putin’s imperial greed.

If treaties and agreements between countries are to be trusted, the US and the UK must stand by the original Budapest Memorandum and give the Ukrainians everything they need to push Russia out of Ukraine, as President Trump said he would do before taking Putin’s latest call. It is the only way for Ukraine to get its territory back and put an end to this brutal invasion.

If the US and Russia continue to ignore the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, how on Earth can Ukraine be expected to have any faith in yet another Budapest memorandum signed in the same city between Russia and the United States? They can’t.

This is the most bearish my timeline has been since Covid, with no close second 🐻 📉:

People who have never owned a bond are quoting overnight bond futures and swap spreads.

People who have never traded a currency are tracking the pre-market yen and yuan.

People who don’t realize you can’t trade Spot VIX are quoting Spot VIX.

People who don’t understand a real bear market are getting really bearish.

And I think they’re going to be right for a bit longer.

Just long enough for the whipsaw to catch you offsides. You lighten your exposure, but then there’s a monster multi-day rally. Sweet relief, it’s over. You pile back in. Yes, you missed the bottom but you know you’ll get most of the recovery.

So you chase the bounce, only to discover there are lower lows to be plumbed: offsides again.

A Great Bear market doesn’t fall 20% then recover:

It jukes and dodges.

It falls and rallies.

It crashes and rips.

It is head fakes and narratives and bear porn - being negative feels and sounds so fking smart.

In sum, it takes the path of maximum pain, extracting more from you with each jagged move.

It milks you.

Maximum pain means the Great Bear draws you in and kicks you out at all the wrong times. It is raw emotion and you do worse than if you’d done nothing.

You want to give up, so you finally exit and actually do nothing, only to watch it rip again.

But you wise up - this time you don’t chase it, because you have learned your lesson and you know better…

…except you don’t.

It really was over.

If this is a Great Bear, that’s when the bottom is in: when you quit and you’re set back ten years.

Don’t think you can avoid it.

It is your destiny.

Remember, pro-Kremlin propagandists rarely talk about Russia, because there's not many positive things to say about the country.

The "traditional Russia" has one of the highest divorce rates in the world, the biggest HIV/AIDS epidemic in Europe, the country is in the bottom 20 in press freedom (and almost all the other 20 are Kremlin's allies), there is a massive problem with alcohol in drugs, they have a big problem with human/sex trafficking, they lead the developed world with the worst sanitation and sewer record, and 23% live without a centralized sewage system and 6% lacks a sewage system altogether. In addition, domestic violence is a severe issue.

Russia's prisons are full of drug addicts and violent criminals, who are then sent to fight in Ukraine. Russia's birth rate is extremely low and they try desperately fix it by abducting Ukrainian children and force-adopting them to Russian families.

There is a massive ongoing brain drain out of the country, and Russia hasn't invented or developed anything useful in ages. If Western companies stopped sending them components and materials, their war industry would be done.

Whenever you tell them this, they show you photos from that one nice metro station in St. Petersburg and then start talking about the "decadent West" or "corrupt Ukraine".
