If you ask most voters what local government does, they will say “collect bins, fix potholes, provide local services”.

The reality is they’re a self-bankrupting social care ponzi scheme.

Almost the whole budget goes on an exponentially growing welfare bill, with contracts awarded with no competition.

Bereft of the money, talent and, crucially with no ability to make meaningful decisions, they preside over the demise of their local communities.

Westminster tells them to spend whatever they like and wack it on their balance sheet as an unfunded liability.

The hapless residents lose out on ever more things they care about in service of funding ever more welfare for a fraction of the community. And they’re asked to pay ever more in tax, for ever less.

The only winners are the executive teams that feast on insane multi-six figure salaries and pensions that would make a FTSE CEO blush.

When Reform wins in 2029, all this will change.

Junior doctors, who now want to be known as resident doctors, took 44 days of industrial action between March 2023 and July last year, which ended when Labour awarded them a 22% pay rise three weeks after taking office.
They were awarded another above-inflation pay rise of 5.4% this year — more than nurses and the rest of the public sector.
Naturally the BMA still thinks all this is not enough.
Ballots for industrial action were sent to doctors on Tuesday. Now doctors are demanding a further 29% increase.
How Labour handles this might well determine its future as a government.
