• Their own $25M hiring freeze got cut to $5M this year (p.74)
• 13 officials getting raises to $305K (p.101)
•Their own budget says 80/20 healthcare cost-share is standard — they still cover 90%+ (p.16)

This is a deficit of choice, not necessity. Stop blaming Trump. Look at page 72.

America is getting dangerously close to having more seniors than children.

In 2005, there were 2.1 Americans under 18 for every person over 65.

Today, there are only 1.2.

And by 2030, the ratio will dip below 1.0, indicating the U.S. will be in organic population decline.

(in fact, states like Florida are already there)

This means fewer young people entering their prime homebuying years.

And more aging homeowners downsizing and passing homes to their estates.

In other words: fewer future buyers competing for a growing number of homes owned by older Americans.

Almost nobody in housing is paying attention to this yet.

I and others have been explaining for years that Harris County has a spending problem. A new proposal this week to create a new department will only add to our current spending and, as a result, taxing problem.

Regarding law enforcement, I will always support that. It’s one of the main reasons county government exists along with infrastructure. What so many fail to mention or print is that the raises given to constables is statutory. We - by state law - must (and should and did) approve increases for those that serve and protect our communities. I will support that every time.

Like any budget, there is fat and waste and areas where we can save. While other counties in the state either cut taxes or keep them at the same rate for the benefit of their communities, SOME in Harris County find new ways to create a financial burden for residents.
