What's the problem with the NPP government's plan to extend the retirement age of judges. There is a lot but here are a few process problems.
1.(a)The NPP want to pass the constitutional amendment with only two thirds majority and without a referendum.
1(c) Passing this without a referendum will set a precedent allowing future Parliaments to change the retirement age on a whim. If a government has a 2/3rd majority, they can get rid of judges by reducing the age of retirement & without impeaching them.
1978 "Rajadurai Amendment" to #SriLanka constitution hurt democracy.
2026 “Surasena Amendment” treads the same ground. It can hurt the judiciary. Whenever judges who benefit from #SurasenaAmendment side with the govt there will be a❓mark.
Judges will gain time & lose respect🥺
https://t.co/080bgBEyEl (PFL) is your place to understand #SriLanka economy, above the noise of the news.
For instance:
PFL says: govt well exceeded 2025 targets on revenue. Great news!
[AꓭBA would say: "money money money… all the things I could do"... from the tax man's world]
The continued detention of Brig Suresh Sallay under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) is wholly unacceptable. If overwhelming evidence exists as the state claims, then charge. If not, let out on bail. This normalisation of detention with minimal judicial oversight must stop.
ST has informed me now that he is not able to present himself at the Committee on Public Finance tomorrow to discuss the issues regarding the missing USD 2.5m. This is unacceptable as the Constitution of #SriLanka places full control of public Finance with Parliament and by standing order COPF is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for OVERSIGHT on DEBT REPAYMENT among many other important matters. Thus, him being summoned is not an act of discretion but a constitutional duty of the Committee. He has to answer questions by the committee. And he had the opportunity to put the ‘record straight’ if by any chance he was being wrongly accused. But why is he running away? What is there to hide? As the incumbant ST he has a responsibility. He must fulfil that responsibility or if he cannot, he must give it to someone who can. This is also personal to him since he is the first ever politician to occupy this important civil service position; he sat as an MP of the JVP/NPP government and even as a member of our Committee till the day before this appointment. This high handed act shows total lack of respect for the parliamentary system of checks and balances that is so critical post-crisis [that is why the COPF is chaired by a member of the opposition since the 2022 meltdown]. It is a kick in the face of the promised ‘system change’ the people of this country voted for. It is also a breakdown of the undertaking to @IMFNews on governance. His excuse is that President will address Parliament next week and he can come by thereafter. That is not acceptable and unrelated.
The fuel queues are not necessary. So why? and how to end them?
@VeriteResearch has three simple suggestion to improve coordination
1. Add a Timing Restriction on access
2. Reduce Frequency of access
3. Increase Volume per access
Read below to learn how this works
To keep pricing fuel on our cost recovery formula?
or not to--and give relief?
We hear this question a lot in #SriLanka with the global price shock triggered by war on Iran.
Good news! it's not a binary choice. Both are possible
1. Fully recover cost
2. Give relief to people
Is #SriLanka making a mistake in seeking IMF's RFI loan?
https://t.co/JOi6albh0W
Important for #LKA to take calculated, not knee-jerk steps to fund its #CycloneDitwah recovery.
Read the thread to learn why RFI loan from IMF is possibly quite adverse in the current context.

@MintPressNews I saw it coming, and I have said it repeatedly. No one can brazenly dehumanise someone (as many Israelis have done with the Palestinians) without losing their humanity in return. And the realisation may provoke unbearable feelings. Franz Fanon has magistrally explained it.
The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker.
And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows.
No more.
I'm trying to think what would have happened to a public figure in America if they had joked about the horrific images of dead Israeli victims of the Oct 7th attack on a TV show in the days after Oct 7th. And whether a studio audience would have laughed.
“Amir walked 12 kilometres to get food, got nothing but scraps, thanked us for it, and died.”
Anthony Aguilar, former US soldier who worked for the GHF, explains that a Palestinian boy kissed his hands, thanking him for aid, and then was killed by Israeli forces moments later
Each of us is called by @FranceskAlbs to examine our own ongoing criminal complicity in the horrors inflicted on the people of Palestine.
Not just by our inaction in society and politics but by our actions in economics: regular consumption and investments.
We can do something, each of us. Sharing her reports, and spreading her message also counts.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr @Tanyaalih for your courage, passion and eloquence.
Watch EVERY MINUTE of this extraordinary interview about the grotesque murder of 9 siblings in Gaza.
I just don't know how she holds it together. /1
