Fifteen National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were kidnapped in Kogi State on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, while returning from their orientation camp in Bayelsa State.

They were traveling to Abuja with Peace Mass Transit. They were intercepted along the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis in Ofu Local Government Area. The passenger manifest is attached.

Eight members of one family were brutally slaughtered inside this very compound, leaving behind a scene of unimaginable grief and devastation.

And then, in the midst of this horror, a tiny two-year-old child was found the only survivor. She had been left for dead, wounded by a bullet that struck her leg and hip.

She was only a baby. Too young to understand why the people she loved were suddenly gone. Too young to comprehend the violence surrounding her. Yet somehow, she survived.

Her little life is a heartbreaking reminder of the precious lives lost and the innocent children who continue to bear the scars of violence.

Today, we remember this family. We remember their lives, their dreams, and the loved ones who will never hear their voices again. And we pray for this little survivor, that God will preserve her life, heal her wounds, and surround her with people who will love and protect her.

Her name is Kyerna Jonathan. She is 35 years old. Her story is one of raw courage, resilience, and a mother’s ultimate sacrifice.

On Monday, August 17th, 2026, armed terrorists speaking Fulani and chanting “Allahu Akhbar” invaded Bin Mper village in Kombun District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. They came in swarms, and her home was the first they broke into.

Her husband, Jonathan Ishaku, was keeping watch outside. With no weapon to defend his family and no time to get them out, he ran into a nearby cornfield, praying the attackers would pass over his house. They did not. Their mission was to leave no survivors.

They shot off the door locks and stormed the room where Kyerna lay sleeping with her five children, firing round after round from automatic rifles.

With seconds to act, Kyerna made a choice. She threw herself over her two youngest children who were sleeping beside her bed, using her own body as a shield.

The gunmen kept firing for several minutes, hitting her multiple times in the back before leaving her for dead.

When rescuers arrived minutes later, they found Kyerna bleeding heavily and unable to move. But beneath her, the two children she had covered were completely unharmed.

Tragically, she did not have time to reach her three other children. They were killed in the attack. They were among the 25 people buried the following morning in Bin Mper village.

Kyerna survived. She was rushed to the hospital where she is currently receiving treatment for her injuries — a mother who took the bullets meant for her children and lived to tell it.

To Nigeria, the Church, our leaders, and the world:

Please pause and look at this casket.

Inside is not a statistic. It is a young evangelist—a son, brother, friend, and servant of God who dedicated his life to sharing the Gospel.

He returned to his hometown to bury a relative. He came home to mourn with his family. He never imagined that he would become the one lying in a casket.

He came home carrying grief, not a weapon.

Yet violence followed him home.

Behind this casket is a mother who will never hear her son’s voice again. A family that must now bury someone who came home to help bury another. A church that has lost a servant. A life filled with dreams, memories, prayers, and purpose.

Please do not scroll past this as just another tragedy.

There is a name behind this casket.
There is a family behind it.
There is a life behind it.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted.”

Lord, draw near to this family. Comfort his mother, strengthen his loved ones, and uphold his church.

Our faith does not mean we should be silent. We will continue to pray, but we must also continue to call for justice, protection, and peace.

How many more caskets must we see before we understand that these are not numbers, but human beings created in the image of God?

May his life not be forgotten.

May his Gospel continue to speak.

And may the day come when Nigerian families no longer gather around caskets because of violence, but around tables filled with laughter, worship, thanksgiving, and peace.

Lord, have mercy on Nigeria.
Protect the innocent.
Comfort the brokenhearted.
Strengthen Your Church.
Bring peace to our land.
