Gifted children, defined as children who are significantly advanced in their academic development or in a specific area of talent or creative way of thinking, have special needs. Just because their mere existence threatens other students and parents of other children doesn't mean they don't have special needs, because they do. In my view, we ought to do broader screening of giftedness and encourage and support giftedness in its many forms, rather than squash excellence in the name of equity.
