There’s a Turkish TV series called Gibi, and one of its most iconic lines is this: “The truth has no value. We live according to whatever the common belief is.”

Every time certain groups in Somalia launch another smear campaign against Türkiye, that line comes to mind. You might say, “Is Türkiye so different?” Not really. It’s the same everywhere — people live by the dominant narrative, not by the truth.

The same actors who attacked Türkiye during the Ankara Process are now at it again — this time using the recent agreement brought transparently before the Turkish parliament. Why? Because they don’t want Somalis to know the truth. They want to shape public opinion with lies, not facts. One of the wildest lies going around is that “Türkiye will take 90% of Somalia’s oil.” That’s a claim so ridiculous even a newborn wouldn’t buy it — but some are pushing this propaganda to mislead a nation that’s only now beginning to stand on its feet.

And how are they doing it? By quoting a website linked to FETÖ — a terrorist group that attempted to overthrow Türkiye’s legitimate government in 2016, killing and injuring thousands, and causing billions of dollars in damage. These people are spreading FETÖ’s lies, not to defend Somalia, but to weaken Somalia’s relationship with Türkiye.

So, what’s the actual truth?

Somalia said: “I believe there’s oil in my territory. Türkiye, can you help me extract it?” Türkiye responded, “Yes, but let’s be realistic — this requires massive investment. We need to bring ships, conduct seismic studies, drill wells, and handle logistics. That’s going to cost, say, $1 billion. Who’s going to pay for that?”

Somalia agrees: “You fund it, and once we find oil, you can recover your investment from the first revenues — up to 90% until your money is repaid.” That’s it. That’s the entire point of the clause. This isn’t Türkiye “taking 90% of Somalia’s oil.” It’s a cost-recovery model, common in nearly every country with international oil agreements.

But here we are, watching trolls twist it into “Türkiye will take 90% of our oil!” as if Türkiye is robbing Somalia. What if no oil is found? Has anyone thought of that? Türkiye takes on all the financial risk — and could end up with nothing.

Let’s say oil is found. A new agreement will be made. Once the cost is recovered—whether that takes six months or two years—the share will return to a mutually agreed percentage that would be decided by the new agreement. That’s how it works everywhere in the world. And even then, maybe, Türkiye won’t be the only one extracting oil. Maybe a consortium will be formed. Nothing in the current agreement says Türkiye gets exclusive rights forever.

This is the truth. People who want to believe it, will. Those who want Somalia to remain weak, dependent, and unable to manage its own resources — they’ll keep believing lies. That’s the real choice we all face.

Renowned Turkish journalist Nazlı Çelik, General Director of Star News, spent the weekend in Somalia, meeting with the Turkish sailors stationed on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Reporting from the flagship of the naval fleet, TCG Gediz frigate, Çelik documented the strength of the Turkish Navy and the pride it brings to the nation. The TCG Gediz is part of a critical mission, escorting and protecting the Oruç Reis seismic research vessel, which is conducting vital exploration for oil and natural gas in the region.

“We are here in Mogadishu, Somalia, at one of the most chaotic and dangerous waters of the world,” said Çelik. “For months, our soldiers have been thousands of kilometers away from their families, on duty for Türkiye. They are protecting our seismic research vessel, Oruç Reis, and showcasing the unmatched power of the Turkish Navy.”

“This is more than just a naval mission,” said Çelik. “It’s a testament to the power and dedication of the Turkish Navy, safeguarding our interests in some of the most challenging waters in the world.”

With their fingers on the trigger and eyes scanning the vast ocean for threats, the crew of TCG Gediz is on high alert, ensuring the safety of Türkiye’s maritime missions in the region. Their responsibility is immense, as they operate at the forefront of Somali waters, safeguarding Türkiye's strategic interests while fostering stability in the region.

Speaking about the agreement, Somalia’s Energy Minister highlighted Türkiye’s role as a trusted partner: “They took the risk to come here in 2011 when no one else did. They also took the risk to conduct three-dimensional seismic research. Why shouldn’t they benefit from our resources too? They’ve earned their place as a partner.”

The contributions of the Turkish Task Group in Somalia go beyond securing critical assets. Their presence has created a safer environment in Somali waters, a development that has caught the attention of other African nations. “As the fruits of our security efforts in Somalia become evident, other African countries are now reaching out, seeking similar cooperation models,” added Çelik.

As part of her Somalia coverage, Çelik also visited Türkiye’s prestigious military training facility in Mogadishu. This training base, a cornerstone of Türkiye’s commitment to Somalia’s stability and self-reliance, has been instrumental in developing Somalia’s security forces. I am thrilled to announce the Turkish translation of Making Sense of Somali History, the two-volume masterpiece by one of Somalia’s foremost intellectuals, Dr. Abdurrahman Baadiyow. Published under the title Somali Tarihini Anlamlandırmak by Afrika Vakfı Publications, this work brings a fresh perspective to Somali history.

Somalia holds great significance for Türkiye, yet academic studies on the country often lag behind the depth of our political relations. I am confident that this insightful work will serve as a valuable resource for Turks interested in understanding Somalia’s complex history.

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Baadiyow in Djibouti during the Promoting Regional Stability: The Importance of Rules-Based Cooperation, Trade, and Peace in the Horn of Africa program hosted by the Heritage Institute at Palais du Peuple Djibouti. It was a privilege to present him with the first copies of the book’s Turkish edition.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Baadiyow for his unwavering support in making this project a reality.

Bu eser, Afrika Vakfı Yayınları tarafından yayımlandı ve Somali tarihine yeni bir bakış açısı getiriyor.

Somali, Türkiye için oldukça önemli bir ülke olmasına rağmen, Somali üzerine yapılan akademik çalışmalar ne yazık ki siyasi ilişkilerimizin gerisinde kalıyor. Bu değerli eserin, Somali’nin tarihini anlamak isteyen Türk okuyucular için önemli bir kaynak olacağına inanıyorum.
