IMF & WORLD BANK HAVE NOT HELPED AFRICA
How can we trust institutions established during colonial times by the very forces that colonised us? This is the question posed by Fadhel Kaboub (@FadhelKaboub on X), an associate professor of economics at Ohio's Denison University, who critiques global financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Despite their inclusive names, these institutions act as neo-colonial tools, deepening poverty and dependency in Africa and the Global South.
After decades of so-called ‘aid,’ little progress has been made in Africa, while Western countries advance by exploiting its resources. For example, the foreign-backed proxy war over natural resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has lasted over 30 years. Instead of addressing exploitation, the World Bank supports projects like the Inga Dam, which critics say facilitate further resource extraction under the guise of aid.
Western powers, led by the US and supported by Europe and the G7, control these institutions. They back initiatives like the Lobito Corridor, a 1,300-kilometre strip of land featuring a railway that snakes through Zambia, the DRC and Angola to ship Africa’s resources across the Atlantic Ocean. The World Bank also supported apartheid South Africa, a history it prefers to forget.
Given that Africa pays out more in debt and resource extraction than it receives in aid, is it not time for the rest of the continent to reject these colonial-era models and pursue African-led development, like our siblings in the Sahel?

Bismillah,
The national dialogue initiative put forth by #Somalia President @HassanSMohamud that aims to (a) resolving the political uncertainty of the past year, particularly regarding constitutional and electoral disputes, and (b) uniting efforts in the just struggle against Al-Shabaab terrorists, is a welcome and commendable step. Moreover, the fact that the President has issued this call with only a year left in his term is a positive sign.
However, if caution is not exercised and lessons are not learned from previous failed political dialogues of 2021 and 2016, this initiative has the potential to plunge the country deeper into chaos, undermining the nation’s quarter-century-long reconstruction process.
In the last two election cycles, “political stakeholders” have agreed on an electoral process that had blatantly deprived Somali citizens of their legitimate right to freely and fairly elect their parliamentary representatives.
Given this checkered past, I call for this initiative not to become another “deal” that sacrifices the rights of the Somali citizen. Leaders at both levels of government must agree on an electoral system based on justice, equality, and transparency.
If they fail to do so, it is certain that they will not achieve their second goal of countering Al-Shabaab terrorism. Throughout the world, armed insurgencies thrive in environments plagued by injustice, favoritism, discrimination, and the looting of shared resources, afflictions that have become widespread in our country.
Finally, if this initiative fails to produce results that benefit the Somali people and instead becomes yet another platform for “political stakeholders” to divide the political loot among themselves as usual, the direct beneficiaries of the resulting fallout will undoubtedly be Al-Shabaab and the regional countries that have been seeking to exploit our nation’s vulnerabilities.

There is this new wave of colonialism taking place in Africa. It is subtle but very brutal, actually even more brutal than Version 1 which was characterised by guns and bibles. This new wave is called Carbon Offset Agreements.
My brother Mordecai Ogada has simplified this so that people make sense of because it is huge load of comple tosh.
So, imagine you own a car, I approach you with an offer to 'maintain' the car off a 50 year agreement that you will have to enter into with me. The car remains in your name but you sign off ownership to me for a period of 50 years. During that period you have no rights to the car, cannot drive it and cannot use it for anything. If any, I could have you arrested for trespassing if ever I found you inside the car. Every year you must still pay disc renewal fees and any other fines since the car is in your name.
Does this make sense to you? Of course not but this is how Carbon Offset Agreements work, and African governments and political leaders are signing off on these in exchange for fully paid trips , accomodation abroad and a lifetime of opulence and self aggrandizement. Africans are told these Carbon Offset Agreements and meant to conserve the planet and reduce carbon footprint.
The biggest wielders of these Carbon Offset Agreements are from Europe,North America, UAE,and Saudi Arabia. Kenya under William Ruto has gone to the extent of granting Carbon Offset Deals legislative legality. Community land is being taken over and Kenyans are being told to reduce their livestock herds and save the planet from livestock emissions.
Below are examples o Carbon Offset Agreements MoUs signed by four African governments in the past few months with a Dubai based company called Blue Carbon. The company is owned by Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum, the youngest member of the Dubai Royal Family. He started this company in October of 2022.
1. Liberia
The country has reached an MoU with Blue Carbon to sign away 10% of its total forest land mass which amounts to a million hectares for a period of 30 years.
2. Tanzania
The country has entered into an MoU to sign away 8 million hectares of forest land to Blue Carbon.
3. Zambia
The country has entered into an MoU to cede 8 million hectares of forest land to Blue Carbon.
4. Zimbabwe
The country has reached an MoU with Blue Carbon to sign away 7.5 million hectares of its forest land.
In both cases, the Blue Carbon promise is to conserve the land on behalf of the African countries, put it on display in Carbon Trading Markets for "investment " by the big polluters. For example, Shell can continue polluting and atone for that by "investing " in conservation efforts through acquisition of carbon credits.
From November the 28th to December the 6th, The United Arab Emirates is going to be hosting the COP28 where African will be displayed for partition by the American,European,Asian, and Arab countries. Berlin Conference all over again, this time around with Africans in attendance and signing off. Save those dates and let us make the right noises and apply necessary pressures. Above all, start preaching to your village communities not to enter into any agreements with anyone who promises them money in exchange for conservation of their own land. These people are coming for everything aided by our political leaders.
Fight or Perish.
