The Japanese soldier had been hiding with a grenade for about a day and a halt but never got the chance to attack. In the end, he was given a cigarette in exchange for his surrender.

Wilbert was fatally wounded on December 25, 1969 in the Binh Thuan province of South Vietnam. He was 27 years old.🕊️

A recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals Staff Sergeant Gillespie is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC on Panel 15W Line 92. Wilbert lies in rest at Galilee Cemetery in Sarasota Florida.
