Two men reportedly joined businessman Joshua Nteireho Rushegera’s vehicle shortly before he and his companion, Merina Tumukunde, were shot dead at close range near Nambigirwa Bridge on the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway on September 5, 2019.
Nteireho, 38, a businessman linked to the First Family, and Tumukunde, 37, a Rwandan national, were killed at about 10:30 pm in Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, in a case that remained largely unresolved.
Earlier that evening, Nteireho had picked up Police Constable Davis Taremwa, a Counter-Terrorism officer and personal acquaintance, from Hidden Treasure Hotel in Entebbe.
The three travelled to Millennium Hotel in Zana, where Nteireho was expected to meet car dealer Robert Suubi over a Toyota Harrier. Taremwa reportedly went into the hotel to contact Suubi, but Nteireho and Tumukunde drove away with his AK-47 rifle and police cap.
According to accounts from the investigations and CCTV footage, Nteireho later received a phone call and met unidentified men at a fuel station in Kajjansi. Two of the men reportedly entered his black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, registration number UAW 543B, while others travelled ahead in a Toyota Harrier.
The Prado later reached Nambigirwa Bridge, where the occupants reportedly shot Nteireho and Tumukunde in the head at close range. Nteireho’s body was found outside the vehicle on the road, while Tumukunde was found seated in the rear.
The assailants reportedly abandoned the Prado and fled in the Harrier.
Police initially ruled out suicide based on the bullet trajectories. Taremwa was arrested after his rifle was recovered at the scene, while several other suspects, including relatives of Nteireho, were also arrested during the investigations.
Most suspects were later released for lack of sufficient evidence. Investigators examined possible motives involving land disputes, business dealings and money, but none was conclusively established, leaving the double murder largely unresolved.
Never turn your back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half. Never run away from anything. Never!”
