When driving through a work zone on a construction project, a driver may notice a stretch without visible activity. This is a normal part of construction sequencing.
Depending on the length and type of project, several factors are always in play.
In 2028, the SDDOT plans to administer a construction project on S.D. Highway 45 from U.S. Highway 14 in Miller approximately ten miles south to 208th Street.
If you are interested in the borrow material process, please call 605-626-7883.

Roads in the county are in poor condition. There are several areas of significant drifting and ice. Visibility is reduced. If you must travel reduce speed, use headlights and buckle up. Interstate highways outside of Sioux Falls are closed.
A VERY impactful winter storm is moving our way this weekend with heavy snow and wind likely. The heaviest snow looks to be just north of Interstate 90. Stay tuned as we fine-tune the forecast!
Our unsettled weather pattern of light precipitation continues...
While most locations will receive 1” of snow or less through tonight, a few spots may receive 2" of snow (highest chance over northeastern SD into west central MN).
Congratulations to Dan Strand, Pierre Area Project Engineer, for his 40 years of dedicated service with the SDDOT!
Dan (pictured left) recently received his 40-year pin from Pierre Area Engineer, Dean VanDeWiele. Thank you Dan, we truly appreciate all you do! #SDDOT#SD511

Cold air continues to settle into the region, and readings will warm very little today. Temperatures continue to fall tonight, with wind chills 10 to 30 degrees below zero. Warmer air moves in Sunday but winds will also be on the increase #SDWX
Here's a radar update showing precipitation types across central and northeastern SD. Freezing rain will continue for a few more hours before switching over to snow later this afternoon. Be prepared for slick roads! #SDwx#MNwx
Winter weather is impacting the western and central portions of the region and will continue shifting eastward throughout the day. Expect very icy roadways in areas experiencing freezing rain, as well as winter driving conditions and intermittent icy spots where snow has fallen.
Winds will pick up in tonight, with gusts up to 60 miles per hour. Rain will transition to snow. Blowing snow, high winds, and wet roads freezing could make travel hazardous. Please stay weather aware, slow down, and buckle up. #drivesafeSD
Heads up! More wintry weather expected Thursday.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for locations west of the James Valley for freezing rain/wintry mix potential on Thursday morning. Ice accumulations up to 0.10” are possible. Hazardous travel conditions possible #sdwx
