The 2026 Asian Games being hosted in Aichi-Nagoya has come under immense controversy over its treatment of athletes and poor organization.

Athletes reportedly slept on the floor of a cruise ship lobby after their accommodation records could not be located, and the quality of the accommodation and food provided to athletes has also drawn criticism.

🇯🇵 Japan opened Asia’s biggest Games with no village, flooded rooms and a tribute to the man who invaded Korea

The 20th Asian Games opened in Aichi-Nagoya on the 19th September. Organisers skipped a proper village and called it cost-cutting. What arrived instead was a docked Italian cruise ship for about 4,000 people, 200 container units for another 2,000 and hotels scattered across several cities.

The saving never arrived though. The bill including the Asian Para Games is reported at about 370 billion yen, more than three times the original estimate. Wow!

Then the registration system could not find the athletes standing in front of it. China’s 240-strong contingent landed at Nagoya on the 16th September and waited five to six hours because the organisers’ system could not pull up their details and the gymnastics squad of 21, only two names registered.

Zhang Boheng, twice an Olympic silver medallist and a world champion, said it how it is. Up at 3.30am, breakfast at 7am and nothing again until close to 7pm. That is twelve hours... Heavy rain then stopped him boarding the cruise ship, so he booked a hotel himself and commented he was “Completely exhausted.”

At the airport, the holding area offered water and nothing else. Sun Yingsha stretched on a yoga mat in the terminal; China’s badminton team stopped waiting for the official bus and the consulate in Nagoya helped arrange cars through local Chinese residents.

South Korea’s basketball players were put in container units with beds 1.95 metres long, a squad of two-metre athletes could not straighten their legs. Player Byun Jun-hung filmed water pouring from a leaking sink and posted “please save us”. Korea took action and moved the team out to a hotel.

Record rain then flooded the container camp and hundreds of athletes and officials were evacuated at night. A typhoon was forecast to approach the coast on the 21st September, with the cruise ship village still full.

India’s rowing team waited nine hours at the pier, again with water and no food. Thailand’s sepak takraw squad of 24 arrived to find their names had never been entered into the accommodation system at all, so they slept on the floor of the cruise terminal until after midnight. Kazakhstan waited two hours and called itself lucky.

The buses were no better either. Shuttles carrying the South Korean and Qatari football teams were driven to a baseball stadium instead of the rugby ground. Vietnam’s women’s volleyball team was dropped at the wrong hotel and walked with its luggage in the heat.

Then comes the detail that tells you who this event was actually built for. Japan’s own delegation had rooms allocated by arithmetic, headcount divided by two. Five men and five women were handed five twin rooms, coaches were put in with athletes, Japan’s Olympic committee had quietly reserved city hotels as a backup and nobody else had one.

Then the anthems. Before the men’s field hockey match against Bangladesh, organisers played North Korea’s anthem for the South Korean team. Both countries call their anthem Aegukga and they are entirely different songs. The Korean players stood there unsure what to do and the organisers apologised.

Then, at the welcome ceremony for the cruise ship village, performers appeared as Oda Nobunaga, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the three heroes of Nagoya. Hideyoshi is the man who launched the invasion of Korea in 1592. Seoul protested. The organisers said the act was regional culture and tourism, with no historical message intended.

Hangzhou hosted the last Asian Games with a full village, working transport and a Games the continent still talks about. Japan last held these Games in Hiroshima in 1994, thirty-two years ago.

Japan has spent decades selling itself as precision, hospitality and the adult in the room. Athletes came to compete, they got a logistics failure, a budget blowout and a history lesson nobody asked for.
