Let’s rewind to 1989. In this rare footage, you see Cyril Ramaphosa, who would later become South Africa’s president, addressing ANC’s Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) troops in Uganda. Yap, that’s him... But how did he get there?

Well, Cyril Ramaphosa; then a senior @MYANC representative, was speaking to MK recruits during a secret pass-out ceremony at Kaweweta, in present-day Nakaseke District.

Uganda played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle against apartheid. By the late 1980s, it had become a training hub for MK fighters, offering both military and ideological education. The Kaweweta base was later renamed the Oliver Reginald Tambo Leadership School, in honour of the ANC’s former president and a symbol of African solidarity.

President @KagutaMuseveni has often highlighted Uganda’s contribution, noting that South African fighters trained at Kaweweta between 1989 and the end of apartheid. He recalled receiving the prestigious ‘Order of South Africa’ medal in recognition of his contribution in the liberation of the people of South Africa from colonialism.
