Siad Barre's proclaimed scientific socialism to combat tribalism, declaring it equivalent to class conflict. Developing Gedo would have contradicted this ideology & given ammunition to critics claiming he favoured his own Marexaan clan.

Siad Barre also deliberately avoided developing Gedo to prevent accusations of clan favoritism.

Instead, he focused on other regions, showing his commitment to national unity over tribal interests.

Both leaders understood that visibly favoring their home region would undermine national legitimacy & fuel opposition.

The Marexaan in Gedo are split between the guri ('original inhabitants') and the galti ('new settlers').

Guri-Galti conflicts over power and resources are common, making unified development challenging.

The Marexaan clan played significant roles in conflicts with Ethiopia, from commanding forces in 16th century campaigns against Ethiopia.

Then again to Siad Barre's 1977
Ogaden War invasion.
