Pinarayi Vijayan was built for command, not compromise. A decade in the Chief Minister's chair, where dissent was often steamrolled and institutions bent to the will of the party, revealed the authoritarian DNA beneath the red flag.
Now, stripped of power after the LDF's rout in 2026, he steps into the opposition benches, not as a graceful democrat ready to play by the rules, but as a battle-hardened veteran who knows only one mode: total control.
His tenure as Leader of the Opposition promises to be agonising for himself and the party.Democrats thrive on debate and accountability. Despots thrive on dominance. Pinarayi, at 81, is unlikely to reinvent himself. The real drama of Kerala politics is only beginning.
#Kerala : Rajya Sabha denial puts George Kurien’s ministerial future in doubt
The BJP’s decision not to renominate Union Minister of State #GeorgeKurien to the #RajyaSabha from #MadhyaPradesh has all but sealed his likely exit from the Union Cabinet in the impending reshuffle.
The BJP on Thursday announced party national general secretary #TarunChugh and state secretary #RajneeshAgarwal as candidates for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh, leaving out George Kurien, whose term as MP in the Upper House ends on June 21.
Kurien had entered the Rajya Sabha in June 2024 through a by-election after the seat fell vacant following Jyotiraditya Scindia’s election to the Lok Sabha.
Soon after becoming an MP, Kurien was inducted into the Narendra Modi ministry as Minister of State handling Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Minority Affairs.
With the BJP now deciding against giving him another Rajya Sabha term, Kurien’s continuation in the Union Cabinet has become difficult.
The development comes amid strong indications of an imminent reshuffle of the Union Cabinet.
Political circles in Kerala see the denial of a Rajya Sabha seat as a clear sign that Kurien may have to step down from the ministry in the coming weeks.
Kurien’s recent electoral setback in Kerala is also believed to have weighed against him.
Contesting from Kanjirappally in the Assembly elections, Kurien suffered a heavy defeat despite campaigning as a Union Minister.
The Union Minister ended up in the third slot, and got only 19.84% of the total votes polled.
BJP leaders privately admit that his performance was disappointing, with Kurien polling fewer votes than senior BJP leader Alphons Kannanthanam secured for the party in the constituency in 2021. Kannanthanam then ended up in the third slot. But got 21.17% of the total votes polled.
The Rajya Sabha elections for the vacant seats will be held on June 18, with results to be declared the same day. By-elections are being conducted to 24 Rajya Sabha seats across ten states.
The latest move has triggered discussions within Kerala BJP circles over the party’s future representation in the Union ministry, especially at a time when the BJP is attempting to strengthen its organisational base in the state.
At present, other than Kurian, Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi is an MoS.
Oh nooo, not the evil white paper exposing our glorious 5 lakh crore debt mountain!
How dare the UDF reveal that 77% of revenue is already devoured by salaries, pensions, and interest, like a starving python that swallowed its own tail after a decade of 'people's planning'!
Comrades, stay strong! This is clearly CIA-funded fearmongering dressed in Excel sheets.
Kerala isn't broke ,we're just innovatively leveraged!
Free bus rides for every aunty in KSRTC? Essential. Even if the buses run on printed promises and the driver's salary is paid in revolutionary slogans.Ignore the arrears of ₹48,733 crore. That's just capitalist accounting tricks.
Real revolutionaries know: when the treasury is empty, you simply declare more welfare! Free travel, free education, free healthcare, free everything ,paid for by borrowing from tomorrow's grandchildren.
Pinarayi didn't mismanage; he was building Kerala Model 2.0: Debt Edition. The white paper is a conspiracy by jealous UDF uncles who can't handle our superior fiscal yoga, bending over backwards while chanting 'development with dignity'.
UDF supporters: Do NOT audit reality. Reality has RSS leanings. Keep those free tickets flowing, even if the state goes full Greece-on-steroids. Socialism dies when you stop promising free rides on a sinking ship! "
(Mic drop in an empty treasury. Echoes of "Inquilab" fade into RBI overdraft alerts.)

KARAN THAPAR: If these tender changes had not been made, would Coempt Edutech have qualified?
SARTHAK: Absolutely not, sir.
KARAN THAPAR: So Coempt Edutech practically benefited from the changes?
SARTHAK: You could say that, sir.
KARAN THAPAR: How concerned are you by what you found?
SARTHAK 🎯: I am concerned that the system is not transparent enough. These things should not be uncovered by students like me. They should be available to journalists and investigators.
