1/ A few hours ago I hacked a group of crypto scammers impersonating @Coinbase Support.
These scammers drain most of their victims out of thousands of dollars!
This thread will show you how the scam works and the methods I used to trace their exact location!๐
Letโs break down CIDR notation like youโre hearing it for the first time:
CIDR = Classless Inter-Domain Routing
It defines how many bits are used for the network part of an IP address.
Example:
192.168.1.0/24
That /24 means the first 24 bits are for the network, and the rest are for hosts.
Each IP address has 4 octets (sections).
Each octet = 8 bits.
So:
11111111 in binary = 255 in decimal.
This is key to understanding subnet masks!
Letโs see how it works:
/8 = 11111111.00000000.00000000.00000000 โ 255.0.0.0 โ 16,777,214 hosts
/16 = 11111111.11111111.00000000.00000000 โ 255.255.0.0 โ 65,534 hosts
/24 = 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000 โ 255.255.255.0 โ 254 hosts
/30 = 11111111.11111111.11111111.11111100 โ 255.255.255.252 โ 2 hosts
/32 = 11111111.11111111.11111111.11111111 โ 255.255.255.255 โ 1 host
What this means in real life:
โข/8 = Over 16 million IPs (used by huge networks)
โข/16 = 65k+ IPs (used by ISPs or large companies)
โข/24 = 254 usable IPs (used in homes or small offices)
โข/30 = 2 IPs (used in point-to-point links between routers)
โข/32 = A single device (often used in firewall rules or identifying one server)
Easy trick:
Each 255 = 8 bits set to 1 in binary = /8
So:
โข255.255.255.0 = /24
โข255.255.255.192 = /26 (because 192 in binary is 11000000 โ 2 more bits)
CIDR gives us more flexibility than the old Class A/B/C system.
We can break networks into just the sizes we need โ no waste.
If youโre in networking or cybersecurity, CIDR is a concept youโll use all the time.
The OSI Model is Uselessโฆ Unless You Know This! ๐ฅ
Most people think the OSI Model is just theory, but if youโre using Ethernet, youโre already dealing with Layer 1 and Layer 2โwhether you realize it or not!
๐น Layer 1 โ The Physical Layer: The Foundation of Ethernet
This is the most basic layer of networking. It handles raw data transmission through:
โ Cables (Ethernet, fiber, coaxial)
โ Radio waves (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth)
โ Electrical signals & voltages
๐ก Think of it like roads for network traffic. Without a stable physical connection, your network wonโt workโno matter how good your router is!
๐ธ Layer 2 โ The Data Link Layer: The Traffic Cop of Ethernet
Once data travels over the Physical Layer, Layer 2 packages and addresses it properly using:
โ MAC Addresses (Unique to every device)
โ Ethernet Frames (Encapsulating data for transmission)
โ Switches & Bridges (Forwarding frames to the right destination)
๐ก Think of it like street signs and traffic rules. Your MAC address is your license plate, and switches make sure data goes to the right device.
How Does This Affect Ethernet Networks? ๐ค
๐น Bad Ethernet cable? Thatโs a Layer 1 issue!
๐น Network slow due to collisions? Thatโs a Layer 2 issue!
๐น MAC Address Filtering for security? Thatโs Layer 2 in action!
๐ก Takeaway: If you donโt understand Layer 1 and 2, troubleshooting an Ethernet network is just guesswork.
Ever had an issue with Ethernet? What was the fix? Letโs discuss! โฌ๏ธ
