Homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his Birth Anniversary: Gandhi is still relevant: India has failed him though!
Seven decades after independence we have not achieved education for all.
I would like to analyse Mahatma Gandhi in terms of three “M's” – his stand on materialism, modernisation and Gandhi as a model for peace.
(A) Materialism
(1) Rampant corruption began with the Congress government immediately upon independence in 1947, as was pointed out by Sarat Chandra Bose during his election campaign in the summer of 1949. He won the election against his Congress rival with a thumping majority (south Calcutta by-election). Corruption has remained endemic ever since, despite the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. True followers of Gandhiji would join the efforts to deal with this scourge.
(2) Gandhiji was by no means against capitalism and the capitalists, but would have been horrified by the sheer scale of wealth amassed by a few and their conspicuous and tasteless consumerism today.
(3) Gandhiji would have strongly supported the creation of wealth with better distribution, both in India and globally. He would have found the income gap we find today in India and across the globe absolutely unacceptable.
(B) Modernisation
(1) Gandhiji was not by any means against technological progress, and indeed we know from his letter to my father Amiya Nath Bose that he was an advocate for the electrification of the villages of India.
Quote: Letter dated 30 April 1945
Dear Amiyo,
Have you worked out the problem of electricity for every home? What is the cost? My remark quoted by you is a poser for the time being… Since you believe in it I want you to work it out and demonstrate the physical and economic possibility of electrifying every home of the seven hundred thousand villages of India…
Amiya, my father, who had then just returned from England as a Cambridge graduate with an Economics Tripos, did work out a plan for Gandhiji. After 75 years of independence we have not succeeded in taking electricity to those thousands of villages in India. So you see, Gandhiji was not only about the “charkha”, he was also for technological progress. Gandhiji would be very disappointed today to find that we haven’t provided electricity to all, nor have we provided the basics of a dignified life to our poverty-stricken millions in terms of sanitation and health facilities.
(2) Gandhiji was also a strong supporter of education for all, for a literate population with the ability to organise and fight for their basic rights. Almost seven decades after independence we have not achieved education for all.
(3) One suspects that Gandhiji would have been an avid user and supporter of today’s mobile phones (!) now available in the poorest villages and slums which Gandhiji knew so well and which were close to his heart and mind.
(C) Model for peace
(1) As a global ambassador for peace, Gandhi’s name resonates to this day. The very word “Gandhian” has entered the languages we speak, to denote a fundamental philosophy of peace and non-violence.
(2) From the iconic Nelson Mandela of South Africa to the nameless Palestinians who protest against the erection of walls and fences through their homes, villages and farmlands by (Israeli) occupation forces, the philosophy and principles of Gandhiji continue to inspire.
(3) Gandhiji’s raw courage, fortitude and patience remain immortalised as examples to us all, old and young alike. We all need to read about his days in the midst of communal violence which raged through cities and villages of India just prior to and following the Partition.
Mumbai, Maharashtra: At the CJP protest, Singer @VishalDadlani says, "I would say this is extremely important. You may support any political party, but if the country's election system itself is compromised, then the country and democracy will no longer survive. So, I would tell everyone, even those who support the BJP, they too are with us and are part of this country. So I would tell them as well; wake up. Remove Gyanesh Kumar, reverse this entire process, eliminate the SIR, and protect every citizen's right to vote..."
They are dividing us in the name of Hindu & Muslim and taking away our voting rights.
We must not let them divide us. We must all come together to save our country and our voting rights!
If Gyanesh Kumar doesn’t resign, cockroaches from across India will march to Delhi & protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
If Delhi Police tries to stop us, wherever they stop us will become our Jantar Mantar..
Ours will be a peaceful andolan. We will walk on the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi. It is up to the Govt & the Delhi Police whether they respect our right to peaceful protest or repeat the brutality we witnessed on July 20.
This is a fight to save our democracy. Every citizen who wants free & fair elections must join.
Gandhi’s great challenge to independent India was never “follow me.” It was: think for yourself.
In today's modern age of political polarisation, instant opinions and viral outrage, what does Gandhi mean to India? Perhaps, more than ever, it means this: never surrender your political conscience to any party, ideology, crowd, influencer or algorithm.
Happy Gandhi Jayanti!
So @UmarKhalidJNU in jail for six years- US mercenary Van Dyke uses Indian territory for actual terrorism & walks free in months. Bhardwaj is Swatantra in days. Need to be upper caste Hindu or white-skinned foreigner in India. Jai Hind.
The debate is no longer about whether to believe or dismiss Rahul Gandhi. The issue is whether every Indian citizen’s vote will be counted and used to elect the government of their choice, or whether the ruling party will be allowed to manipulate the process to remain in power at both the Centre and the state level.

An appeal to every Indian who cherishes the democratic and
secular values that bind our diverse nation together. Let us come together and raise our voices for the India we believe in.
Join us at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on 29 September, from 2–5 PM.
If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by tomorrow, CJP will begin its nationwide protest from Mumbai on 2 October, and take it to cities across India.
This Gandhi Jayanti let’s pledge to save democracy.
The vote is the foundation of Indian democracy.
From the vote flows the power of our Constitution, the authority of our laws, and the legitimacy of our public institutions - this chain defines modern India.
Today this chain is broken, and this has never happened in India before. By destroying the vote, this government and the Election Commission have attacked the expression of every single Indian.
Everything this government has done on the strength of stolen votes is illegal. An MP elected through vote chori holds an illegitimate seat, and every law passed with that MP's support is an illegitimate law.
Gyanesh Kumar must go!
Demand 1: Initiation of criminal proceedings against Gyanesh immediately, and an answer to the question: Who gave him the orders?
Demand 2: Put all upcoming elections on hold. Freeze the SIR and restore the January 2025 voter list. Set up an independent inquiry into the entire SIR decision-making process. We also demand that the Supreme Court immediately take custody of all SIR-related files to ensure no records are destroyed, altered or go missing.
Demand 3: Repeal the 2023 law on the appointment of the Election Commissioners of India and enact a new law that inspires public confidence, with the active participation of members of civil society.
Gyanesh Chor Kumar is a rogue agent who acted without consent of other 2 ECs. Disenfranchising genuine voters is not official duties. He cannot enjoy immunity. He needs to be prosecuted. Simple
