Two Access Specialists shoot the breeze about disabled access in the built environment, among other things.

A gravel parking lot means no accessibility for people with mobility disabilities. This coffee shop provided a concrete pad with two accessible parking spots. And some great coffee, too. #AccessNerds#parking#coffee#JumpingGoat#ADA#accessibility
Does anyone else notice things like this, a sink that’s just barely hanging on? This goes back to the requirement to maintain accessible features. Just imagine someone washing up, leaning onto that sink for balance… #AccessNerds#ADA#maintenance#accessibility
The third CASI Accessibility Codes & Standards Summit is in the books & from all accounts, a huge success. Many thanks to everyone that helped pull it together - our speakers & our attendees. Our hope is that everyone is motivated, inspired & ready to go out & continue this work.
Not all hand held shower units are created equal. This one was a fixed shower head that was stuck into a hose. Creative, but not very user friendly because you had to hold it at such a strange angle. #AccessNerds#ADA#shower#hotel#accessibility
Toilet paper dispensers and how to measure then. That’s a topic that’ll get 10 out of 10 accessibility specialists going every time. Two separate dispensers, side by side…how would you measure this?

The ADA requires a clear floor space at dressing room benches that is at the short end of the bench in order to make transfers from a mobility device easier - a detail many designers are still missing, but not this one we found.

Seeking Public Comments on Proposed Amendments to California Building Code Accessibility Provisions
The California Division of the State Architect (DSA) will hold a public meeting on Monday, October 24, 10AM PT. or more information on how to participate: https://t.co/0hdOyBlxTJ
A recent doctor’s visit came with a counter that was too high (in a new facility). The ADA requires sales and service counters to be no higher than 36” & some states require 34” max. High counters make signing paperwork & communication difficult. #AccessNerds#ADA#accessibility
This morning’s walk brought about the discovery of new curb ramps. These were replaced earlier this year. I’m not sure what sparked the second replacement, but they’ll look great once they’re complete. #AccessNerds#ADA#accessibility#PROW#CurbRamp#Birmingham
@ldwood@HiltonNewsroom Definitely not cool. I’d suggest emailing the manager. Hilton had a settlement agreement with DOJ and I would think/hope they would want to know about this.
A quick glance at the toilet room in a new restaurant had me thinking that they didn’t install grab bars. But they’re the same color as the wall and are difficult to spot. Are they trying to hide them? #AccessNerds#ADA#GrabBars#MyLifeInTheToilet#accessibility
There isn’t anything in the ADA about shower curtains, but one that goes all the way to the floor makes a huge difference for keeping water inside the shower. #AccessNerds#ADA#accessibility#shower#hotel
The US Access Board recently issued some technical assistance on electric vehicle charging stations. California already has some detailed requirements for these spaces in the accessibility chapter of the building code. #AccessNerds#EVCS
Ever heard of “Friday Fail”? This fails every day of the week. A steep curb ramp without a top landing forces people to make the turn on that steep sloped portion, making it very dangerous and pretty impossible to navigate. #AccessNerds#ADA#FridayFail#CurbRamp#design
