Following up on the FBI-stepping-back story I just did: here’s what “self-policing” already looks like in the case that prompted it.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo — the Mexican immigrant with no criminal record shot and killed by an ICE agent in Houston on July 7 while driving to work — had a search warrant for his van filed under seal, standard for an active investigation.

A day later, it was unsealed. While the investigation was still ongoing. Former law enforcement officials are calling that move “baffling.”

The affidavit describes a white crystal substance in plastic bags as “consistent with methamphetamine.” Media ran with it immediately.

The Salgado Araujo family’s attorney says it’s granulated salt — the electrolyte mix construction workers use to survive Texas heat. The Harris County DA has also said he doesn’t believe it’s drugs, and noted publicly it shouldn’t matter either way to whether the shooting itself was justified.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas won’t say who unsealed the warrant, or why.

This is what happens when the same system investigating a killing also controls what gets leaked about the victim. Now imagine that system with even less outside oversight.

This is not to say Trump’s policies are not punishing American citizens, both economically and in terms of our civil rights, they most certainly are, but his base is still largely unaware of his most egregious misdeeds and the full extent of his corruption.
