👶 👩 The Health Minister has welcomed a "deeply important" moment for mothers, babies and families across NI.
🏗️ Minister Nesbitt visited the site of the Mother and Baby Unit at @BelfastTrust City Hospital and met the newly appointed design team.
👇 Hear from the Minister
What a difference a year makes - Belfast Marathon 2025 and @RCP_NI & community nurses ran to highlight need for an MBU in NI. This week saw @mikenesbittni announcing #MBUNI will open 2028/29. Mothers will hold @niexecutive to account.
Good luck to all mums running today. 🌈🏃♀️🤞
A permanent mother and baby unit will be built in the grounds of the Belfast City Hospital. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK without such a facility, forcing around 100 women a year to be separated from their babies when admitted to general psychiatric wards

If you haven't seen Mums in Crisis please take half an hour to watch to understand why today's Mother and Baby Unit announcement is so important. You'll also understand why @mlchealth is a finalist in @amnesty journalist awards - this was such an impactful programme.
After campaigning for almost 20 years, I'm over the moon that a NI Mother and Baby Unit will open. This will save lives and prevent life-long trauma. So, so proud to have worked with @ActionOnPP for 4 years and with @rcpsychNI nearly 20 years ago.
@healthdpt@mikenesbittni@BelfastTrust Everyone at @ActionOnPP is so relieved and grateful the money has been found for this vital unit. We know people have worked incredibly hard to make this happen, not least @mikenesbittni -on behalf of all our mums and families who have campaigned, thank you.
Health Minister @mikenesbittni hopes NI will have a dedicated mother & baby unit up and running "no later than 2028/29". The Minister says a design team will be appointed immediately & confirmed the specialist unit will be based at Belfast City Hospital. #UTV@ActionOnPP
We’re so proud of our amazing 2026 #LondonMarathon Team! 🎖️
A massive congratulations on all your epic awareness and fundraising. It will help make a HUGE difference for mums, parents and families affected by postpartum psychosis 💜
@LizMainMorrison@ActionOnPP Thanks To you Liz and all our mums and everyone who took part. Denise and I are honoured that our programme has been nominated. Women in NI deserve better. They shouldn’t have to make do! @RCP_NI@ActionOnPP to all mums struggling out there ask for help.
It was an honour to support behind the scenes with @ActionOnPP - Mums in Crisis shows just how desperately NI needs a mental health mother and baby unit. @mlchealth and her colleagues deserve this recognition and NI mums deserve an MBU!
