@DraytonCanary1 I felt proper down after losing to France in the QFs in the last World Cup and Spain in the Euros final. For me, the runs in the 2018 WC and the Euros before that under Southgate were a nice surprise, whereas in the last 2 tournaments it felt like much more was on the line.
I find it very hard to do that ranking of every World Cup that others are doing and I can remember every one clearly from 1990 onwards. All I'll say is that 2010 was by far the worst in my lifetime.
@DraytonCanary1 Euros peaked in 2000 I think. I struggled with watching England from about 2006 until Southgate came in and changed the mood around it all. I remember vaguely watching England 1-1 France in Euro 2012 on my lunch in a bar here, but not being bothered I had to leave to go to work.
@DraytonCanary1 I have lots of nostalgia for the World Cups in the 90s, I don't have too much love for the ones between 2002 to 2010. I really liked 2014, partly as I went and Chile had a great team. Enjoyed 2018, England's run helped. Last one had an incredible final and some fun group matches.
@mark_lightfoot@FootballCliches@England_Pod Yeah, that song was also used during the BBC review of the 1990 World Cup. Usually, I'm pretty average in the Cliches quizzes, but I love World Cup trivia so hearing the guys on both sides veer so far off many answers especially in the early rounds was painful at times. 😄
predicting the bracket for a World Cup when third-placed teams qualify is, let's be honest, really unsatisfying. There's 495 possible combinations of which groups will provide those 8. You aren't getting that right, and there's so many moving parts that it's basically pointless.
Fun Fact - Keir Starmer earned the nickname 'Two Tier Keir' from his habit of offering out away fans at the Emirates from the safety of the section above them.
@n0otherwaythere@DandyDonSF Later than that I'd say. England flags weren't widely used at England games until Euro 96. Before then, they had too many negative connotations with the NF. Here's the 1990 semi final in Turin contrasted with England fans in Lens, France in 98.
@nodge_twit Football fans are incredibly loyal and will spend money on the club at pretty much every chance they get. Football clubs know this and exploit it as often as possible. Doesn't make it right.

DR Congo’s pre-world cup friendly against Chile, scheduled for June 9, is facing uncertainty.
Local authorities in La Línea de la Concepción, Spain, are reportedly questioning the authorization of the match due to concerns linked to the Ebola situation in DR Congo.
The fixture is now at risk of being postponed or cancelled or play without the presence of fans.

When Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens kidnapped and murdered Sarah Everard, Nigel Farage released a five-minute video urging people not to attack men or the police.
Today, in response to the murder of Henry Nowak, he called for "pure cold rage."
@oro7777777@ncfc87685 Curious, given we were told that it was impossible this time last year to make any changes to the pre-season already put in place by the Danes.
And if Daryl Sutch doesn't miskick and fall over at Old Trafford on the 12th December 1992 allowing Mark Hughes to score, then Norwich rather than Manchester United would have been the dominant force in English football for 20 odd years. Arise, Sir Mike Walker. #ncfc
Tuning into the new Guardian Football Weekly, wasn't expected to be called racist for not supporting Arsenal by a near-weeping Frenchman. Most uncomfortable podcast I've listened to in a long time. Very unpleasant.
Why did millions of Argentine's go out and celebrate Argentina's 2022 Wold Cup victory without damaging Buenos Aires and the opposite happened in Paris last night after PSG's victory?
I have a simple answer, Argentines love Argentina, the new French hate France.
