"To try to quantify human lives in that way is tragic, but it’s so important to show the impact of unsafe driving, particularly for pedestrians," said Adam Snider, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association's director of communications: https://t.co/HsChhg2381
WATCH: “Every day, 20 people go out for a walk, and they don't return home,” says @AdamKSnider, a spokesperson for the @GHSAHQ, as U.S. cities fail to curb traffic deaths. https://t.co/a8LCl9hiQ4
📉 Pedestrian deaths were down for the second straight year in 2024.
📅 On July 31, we'll share a data overview, hear from two states about their effective safety approaches, and answer your questions. https://t.co/10CP7iN6PI

GHSA is pleased that the continuing resolution is poised to pass the Senate, averting a government shutdown.
There are already enough challenges in roadway safety, like risky driving and enforcement reductions. Potential funding stoppages shouldn't be another threat to safety.
I'm encouraged that roadway safety was such a big part of today's @SeanDuffyWI confirmation hearing. There are a lot of tough and nuanced traffic safety challenges, but also some unique opportunities to save tens of thousands of lives. @GHSAHQ@SenateCommerce@commercedems
GHSA appreciates the focus on roadway safety by Transportation Secretary nominee @SeanDuffyWI and members of the @SenateCommerce Committee during his confirmation hearing today. @commercedems
🧵 A few highlights...
This article in @TheAtlantic by @greg_shill is very encouraging. We need an “all of the above” approach to roadway safety where fair traffic enforcement, infrastructure, technology, emergency medical care and other factors all work together to prevent crashes and save lives.
Last night, GHSA stood with @MADDNational amid 10,000 lights to both remember those killed each year by drunk driving and highlight how many lives can be saved with in-vehicle technology. It's past time to end this preventable crime that kills or injures someone every 78 seconds.
As a parent of two young kids going trick-or-treating tonight, this is hands-down the most terrifying thing about #Halloween.
Worry about cars, not candy.

A @washingtonpost analysis reveals Halloween was the deadliest day of the year for child pedestrians from 2004-2018 and emphasizes the importance of road safety measures and driver caution.

A new @GHSAHQ report shows some progress in improving safety for people traveling by foot, but the number of pedestrian fatalities is still far higher than it was before the pandemic.

U.S. pedestrian fatalities are finally falling after a steep rise during COVID, but much work remains before we reach our goal of zero deaths. I'm looking forward to this conversation about what is being done to better protect people walking. @_RickBirt@DMOIDC@targetzero
