On fiscal austerity
Yes, reducing the deficit is likely to reduce demand and growth in the short run. This is what the discussion about multipliers is about. But, if the alternative is no adjustment and much higher interest rates on the debt, it is a worse alternative.
Put another way, âfiscal austerityâ is unpleasant by nature. But it is no reason not to do it. The analogy with chemotherapy is relevant here. Chemotherapy is not pleasant and makes you sicker in the short term. But if it eliminates your cancer, do you really want to avoid or delay it?
On the role of the Zucman tax.
I have been clear, in past writings, that I am in favor of a tax on the super-rich, along the lines of the so called Zucman tax. The super-rich should pay their share, and too many are able to avoid it. This is even more the case if the deficit must be reduced, and painful spending cuts are needed. But one should be realistic. Even if put in place, such a tax will yield a small fraction of the needed overall adjustment.
On the role of cuts across the board versus reforms.
Obviously, the best adjustment relies on reforms, be it reforms to increase the participation rate of older workers, better orientation and matching of new workers to jobs, better education, and so on. Any reform which plausibly increases productivity and output, and by implication, government revenues is highly desirable. But reforms take time to craft and to pass, and one can never be sure they will work. Given the urgency of the adjustment and the political impasse, I believe that some of the adjustment must take the form of across the board cuts, be it annees blanches, or even decreases in nominal terms.
Trumpâs attack on US institutions, even if fully expected, is dispiriting, discombobulating and dangerous.
In this very difficult time, we have to remember one thing: This is not normal, and it should not be normalized.
If, as I hope, the US democracy survives and (somehow) recovers, then history books will judge those working with Trump and Republican lawmakers in the Senate and Congress enabling him harshly (and so should we). If US democracy does not survive, I donât know what history books will be like.
I think Elon is unhappy that Wikipedia is not for sale. I hope his campaign to defund us results in lots of donations from people who care about the truth. If Elon wanted to help, he'd be encouraging kind and thoughtful intellectual people he agrees with to engage.

Starmer's intervention just now incredibly important. It shows the Govt has decided it can't ignore the threat Musk poses. Has taken the view that a line has been crossed. Suspect other Govt's in the EU and the European Commission will be contemplating similar in the coming days
It was such a pleasure to be at the European University Institue in Florence â a truly unique and wonderful place â to present the Global Tax Evasion Report 2024.

I strongly condemn the inflammatory & irresponsible statements by Israeli ministers Ben Gvir & Smotrich slandering the Palestinian population of Gaza & calling for a plan for their emigration.
Forced displacements are strictly prohibited as a grave violation of IHL & words matter
