The biggest myth I hear when it comes to Bitcoin and crypto tax?

“If I don’t cash out to GBP, I don’t owe any tax.”

Unfortunately, that’s not how it works in the UK.

Let’s break it down.

HMRC doesn't care whether you've turned your crypto into pounds.

Each swap, trade, or transfer that results in a change of beneficial ownership is a taxable event.

That includes:

Swapping BTC for ETH (please dont)

Trading crypto for stablecoins

Using crypto to buy goods or services

It’s not about cashing out. It’s about disposals.

A “disposal” is what triggers Capital Gains Tax.
You might never touch fiat and still rack up a tax bill.

And here's the kicker: the burden of proof is on you.

You need accurate records:

Dates

Values (in GBP at the time)

Costs and proceeds

Wallet movements

Otherwise, it's guesswork—and HMRC won’t be guessing in your favour.

It’s almost as if hiking the basic rate of CGT by 80% and the higher rate by 20% wouldn't magically raise more revenue.

Something anyone with half an economist's brain could have told them.

And it’s almost as if punishing asset holders with higher taxes might just encourage them to leave the UK for more competitive economies.

About 4 months ago, @4cRobin came to me with an idea. One of his kids' schools was open to accepting Bitcoin — but there were a lot of hurdles. Accounting, tax, regulation being one. He asked if I’d speak to them.

A few days later, I met with @Lomondlife. 🧵

I was honestly shocked at how open-minded they were. This wasn’t a PR stunt — it was a genuine move to explore Bitcoin and engage the students.
We covered everything: providers, exchanges, tax... and I put together a practical financial plan.

At the time, I thought: this is going to take some serious work (and probably a bit of orange-pilling). But in just 4 months…
✅ Board approval
✅ Structure in place
✅ Set to accept Bitcoin payments from August 2025

It’s not just an amazing achievement — it’s a pioneering one. This will be the kind of thing others follow.

Even The Times picked it up yesterday (misquoted Bitcoin as “cryptocurrency” in general but hey, we’ll forgive them this time).
