A trained nurse can be the difference between life and death for a mother and her newborn.
In The #Gambia, we are working with @MohGambia and partners to ensure every Gambian mother receives the skilled care she deserves during pregnancy and childbirth.

Gambian Surgeons Celebrated with Prestigious Fellowships in West Africa
A group of exceptional medical professionals from The Gambia has been honored for their outstanding contributions to healthcare at a ceremony in Bamako, Mali. The West African College of Surgeons (WACS) recognized these trailblazers, marking a proud moment for Gambian medicine.
Senior Consultants Dr. Kebba Marenah, Dr. Mariam Joof, and Dr. John Jabang, along with several colleagues, were conferred the prestigious Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) by election. This accolade highlights their leadership and expertise in advancing surgical care in the region.
In addition, Dr. Aminata Manneh, Dr. Sabina Kankagan, Dr. Salifu Gaye, Dr. Sillah, and Dr. Karamba were celebrated as new Members of the West African College of Surgeons. Their achievements underscore a growing legacy of excellence in Gambian healthcare.
Among the standout honorees, Dr. Sabina Kankagan made history as the second Gambian anesthetist and the first from her medical school to earn this recognition. Dr. Aminata Manneh was lauded as the first Gambian ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist, while Dr. Sillah cemented his place as the first ophthalmology specialist fully trained in The Gambia.
These milestones reflect the dedication and skill of Gambian medical professionals, who continue to break barriers and elevate healthcare standards across West Africa. The honors bestowed in Bamako signify not only personal triumphs but also a brighter future for medical innovation and patient care in The Gambia.

October 18, 1997, is a day Bright Oywaya - @oywayab, a road crash survivor, will never forget.
While traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya, she was involved in a road crash that injured her spine, leaving her unable to use her legs and confined to a wheelchair.
Bright, now a passionate advocate for road safety, is the Kenya country coordinator for the @grspartnership.
She says, "Road crashes can affect anyone, so we all need to take a keen interest in road safety. The impacts are not just physical but also financial and psychological."
@grspartnership "Governments need to take road safety seriously. Policymakers need to view road safety as an investment, not an expense, and make it a higher priority," - @oywayab stated during the launch of the @WHO Road Safety Status Report.
@grspartnership@oywayab@WHO Road crashes are rising in the African region more than anywhere else.
We urge governments across the region to prioritize road infrastructure and ensure traffic laws are enforced to prevent loss of lives.
