The Ottoman Empire ruled over European countries for centuries. During its most powerful eras in history, it directly governed or dominated a vast majority of Southeastern, Central, and Eastern Europe. In Ottoman literature, these territories were generally referred to as Rumelia.
The hegemony established by the Ottoman Empire within the borders of modern-day Europe is as follows:
🏰 Directly Governed Balkan and Eastern European Countries
The following present-day European countries were directly governed by the Ottomans as provinces (eyalets) or districts (sanjaks) for hundreds of years:
• Greece, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro: All of these countries remained uninterrupted Ottoman territories for more than 400 to 500 years.
• Hungary: It was directly governed for approximately 150 years under central hubs like the Budin Eyalet.
• Romania and Moldova: Known as the principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, they remained under Ottoman suzerainty for centuries as autonomous (tributary) states that were free in their internal affairs but bound to the empire in foreign policy.
• Ukraine: Direct Ottoman rule was established particularly through the Crimean Khanate and in the southern regions of Ukraine (such as Podolia).
🛡️ Besieged or Influenced Western/Central European Territories
Although the Ottoman Empire did not directly annex certain European countries, it advanced into these regions militarily and shaped their politics:
• Austria: The capital city of Vienna was besieged twice—under Suleiman the Magnificent (1529) and Kara Mustafa Pasha of Merzifon (1683)—but could not be captured.
• Slovakia: It came under Ottoman control for a period through military campaigns like the Siege of Uyvar, and a vassal state was established.
• Poland (Lehistan): From time to time, it became a state that paid taxes to the Ottomans and came under their protection.
• Italy: During the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, the port of Otranto, located at the very tip of the Italian boot, was conquered, and the Ottoman army remained there for about a year.
• Croatia and Slovenia: Numerous military campaigns were organized and fortresses were conquered in these lands bordering Austria and Venice.
By expanding its European borders all the way to the gates of Vienna during its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ottoman Empire became the most decisive actor in European politics. 🇹🇷😎

Ne yüce peygamber efendimize ki neler çekmiş öyle tüm ölmüşlerimize Allahtan rahmet İbrahim amcamızada rahmet okuma dileğiyle amin ..
The Republic is the product of a vision that granted the Turkish nation the freedom to vote and stand for election—at a time when many European countries had not yet extended this right to their own citizens. In the light of this great revolution, which served as a beacon for Europe, happy Republic Day—October 29th! 🇹🇷
