Can a food system built on the logic of capital also be built on the logic of care? Dr. Elaine Power of Queen's University joins Jesse on the 30th episode of the Future Herd to discuss powerful contradictions at the heart of our food system. She offers her understanding of what the system is doing and who’s paying the price for it. Do the “agri” and “food” in agri-food represent irreconcilable political values? Ontario’s livestock sector depends on strong veterinary support, and the Veterinary Incentive Program (VIP) is helping build that capacity. VIP provides financial incentives to encourage newly licenced veterinarians advance their careers in food animal practice, while helping address the growing need for veterinary services in rural and underserved areas. By supporting the next generation of veterinarians, the program is strengthening animal health, on-farm biosecurity, and the long-term resilience of Ontario’s livestock industry.

Are you a newly licensed veterinarian or a recent grad thinking about large animal or mixed practice? The Veterinary Incentive Program (VIP) is helping newly licensed veterinarians (within the last five years) launch rewarding careers in underserviced and northern Ontario communities by providing up to $50,000, distributed over five years, while supporting livestock producers who rely on access to veterinary care.
If you’re currently practicing or interested in relocating to rural or northern Ontario to build hands-on experience, make a direct impact in rural communities, and help strengthen animal health across Ontario, this program is worth exploring.

John Barlow, MP for Foothills, Alberta and the Conservative shadow minister for agriculture, joins Jesse Hirsh for a frank and wide-ranging conversation about why Canadian agriculture keeps falling short of its potential — not for lack of talent or land or ambition, but because the political and regulatory systems that govern the sector too often operate removed from the people most directly affected by their decisions. The central question this episode wrestles with is not whether governments say they support farmers, but whether they actually listen to them before acting. Lobster, ice cream, potatoes (of course) and now AI driven Ag intelligence…It’s all on the menu in PEI! Donald Killorn, Executive Director of PEI Federation of Agriculture joins episode 27 to discuss how the Federation is positioning agriculture as a strategic sector driven by innovation and a mastery of emerging intelligence tools. The leadership skills most urgently needed in agriculture right now are not primarily agronomic, but ecological — the capacity to read complex systems, anticipate where pressure is building, and position an organization ahead of where government funding and policy will eventually land. Don’t miss out! Listen to the episode here: https://t.co/wwkUIEsCzH

So many aisles, perhaps so little choice? Alissa Overend of MacEwan University argues that the food choices Canadians make every day are shaped by forces most of us never consider. Through a practiced sociology lens, Dr. Overend explains how Industry, advertising and cultural norms are working together to define what counts as healthy, who gets to eat well and whose knowledge about food gets taken seriously.
