Back in Nigeria, I was told I had the AA genotype. Not once, not twice, but THREE different times.

I even repeated the test again before marriage because the church insisted on it, despite my husband and I already having our results. At that time, I didn’t question it because I trusted the process completely.

Fast forward to when I got pregnant here in the US, my doctors ran several prenatal tests as part of routine pregnancy care. Then came the shock of my life they told me I was actually AS genotype. I was speechless. Confused. I kept asking myself, “How is this even possible after testing AA multiple times in Nigeria?”

Because of that result, they immediately recommended a procedure called Amniocentesis (some people call it aminocentesis). Amniocentesis is a prenatal test where doctors collect a small sample of the fluid surrounding the baby in the womb using a thin needle. The fluid helps detect certain genetic conditions and can also determine the baby’s genotype before birth. I was terrified but grateful for the opportunity to know early. The result later showed that my unborn daughter was also AS.

The first person I called was my husband. Immediately my grandmother’s words started ringing in my head again. She always warned us growing up: “Never joke with genotype testing before marriage, and always confirm it well.” Honestly, this experience opened my eyes to how important accurate medical testing is. Sometimes we trust results because they came from a hospital or lab, but mistakes can happen anywhere. This is why I always encourage people now don’t just test once and relax. Confirm your genotype properly, especially before marriage and pregnancy.

Some surprises in life can truly change everything.
