It's astonishing how many climate scientists believe the IPCC/fossil fuel propaganda that greenhouse gas emissions increase global warming pretty much in real time. This is absolutely, categorically absurd. It's the staggering amounts of GHGs already in the atmosphere that drive climate change. There are massive delays in the responses of climate feedbacks to the direct warming effect of GHGs. Eventually the GHGs in today's atmosphere will produce a 10C hotter planet after fast and slow feedbacks have operated and the planet has restored its energy equilibrium (as much energy radiated as absorbed) as required by physics. That's right, this planet is at 1.5C of a journey to 10C, predetermined by the GHGs in the air we're breathing. Regularly quoted climate sensitivity of 3C to 5C is a red herring as this doesn't include slow feedbacks, a fact which always seems to be omitted. And slow feedbacks are not slow in the Anthropocene. GHGs added to the atmosphere today won't begin to have an effect until the second half of the century. In stark contrast, cuts in particulate air pollution, which acts as a sunshade, have immediate, powerful and persistent effects.

It gives me no please to say I predicted this in 1992, at a seminar just after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, where the chair said, now we know what the problem is, we can solve it. I challenged him, about what scientists would do, when as sure as night follows day, governments rowed back on what they pledged, like they did after the first UN Environment Conference in 1972. At first, he started to argue with me, then slumped back in his seat, and said I was probably right.

The 1992 Rio Earth Summit only happened, because governments took no action, on the 1972 Action Plan. Saying, we'll take action is easy. But when your priority is economic growth, and the ecological polycrisis is being driven by the all out pursuit of economic growth, it is obvious that governments will renege on their pledges, or rather kick the can down the road to future generations of politicians. If you look, governments were well aware in 1972, that the ecological crisis was driven by the pursuit of economic growth, and that was 54 years ago. There was nothing particularly insightful about my observations, it just involved not being in denial of this long term trend.

Do not blame the public for this. Largely the public was behind action, and until Trump, nearly every government in the world had been promising to address the ecological/climate crisis. The public never stopped the administrations they voted for, taking the action they promised. It was just that the governments never did what they pledged because of vested interest lobbying, to pursue the singular goal of economic growth, and to put it above all else. Do not claim this was done for the public, because most of the profit made by economic growth, ended up in the hands of billionaires, big corporations and the very rich. With the gap between the rich and poor, growing wider and wider.
