That’s one thing that is very admirable about Jains. They have maintained strict dress code and sanctity of their local Derasars and Pilgrimage places (atleast in Gujarat and Marwar). They also worship in same ways as their ancestors in medieval times.

That’s also the reason I find this argument of “Hindus temple culture of north degraded due to Islamic invasion argument very bogus”. There is no reason to assume that what affected one dharmic community didn’t affect other. That degradation is the result of degradation of Hindu society and diminished respect for Brahmins/ temple priests.

“Keep religion at home under lock and key” sounds like a noble idea. It is an attractive utopian thought, but fails miserably in practice.

Consider Malik Kafur’s invasion of Tamilakam. Veera Pandya fought valiantly to resist the invasion. Among those who marched with the Pandya army, there were broadly two kinds of people: those who kept religion at home, and those whose took the religious identity along with them.

During the campaign, the second group found that the invading army shared their religious identity. They chose to switch sides. The consequences were severe, and Veera Pandya suffered a major defeat.

History reminds us that ideals must also withstand the test of human behaviour. Ignoring it will cost us big time.
