One Hand, Whole Heart: The Day Malcolm Marshall became a living legend

14 July 1984, Headingley.
West Indies were in England. The third Test was underway. And on Day 1, disaster struck; Malcolm Marshall, the Caribbean storm himself, tried to stop a sharp drive from Chris Broad and ended up with a double fracture in his left thumb...

The verdict from the doctors?
No cricket for at least ten days.
Rest. Ice. Recovery.
End of story, right?

Not if you know Marshall.

Two days later, West Indies were still batting. Larry Gomes was on 96, partners running out. And just when everyone thought he’d be left stranded, a familiar figure limped out of the pavilion; left hand in a full cast, pads strapped over pain, eyes full of intent...

Marshall didn’t need to do it.
But he wanted to.

“I just thought Larry deserved his hundred,” he would later say, casually brushing off the fact that he walked into a storm of short-pitched bowling with just one usable hand...

And what did he do?
Faced England’s quicks. Withstood bouncers. Even tried an audacious cover drive. Laughed at a miss. Nudged one past gully for four. Pure courage. Pure madness. Pure Marshall.

Eventually, Botham caught him off Gower’s bowling. But the story was only halfway told...

Because then came the second innings.
Still injured. Thumb in plaster. Arm wrapped up in plaster to the elbow. But he was not done. Not even close...

Malcolm Marshall, bowling with pain etched across his face, ran in with relentless rhythm. Chris Broad gone. Fowler stunned. Gatting, Lamb, and the rest followed. By the end of the innings, Marshall had 7 for 53 from 26 overs...

At one point, the English batters even complained that the white plaster on his hand was distracting them. So, Marshall quietly covered it with beige elastoplast and then kept wrecking their stumps...
