What does the university of the future look like?

According to Mr Sanjeev Sanyal, member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, IIT Madras offers a glimpse.

Speaking on the ANI Podcast with Ms Smita Prakash, he described IIT Madras as “the most interesting intellectual cluster in India right now,” pointing to its vibrant ecosystem of research, deep-tech innovation and entrepreneurship.

From brain-mapping and Agnikul’s space rockets to e-planes, drone taxis and indigenous marine-engine development, the Institute is creating an environment where ideas move from research to real-world applications.
Mr Sanyal also highlighted a key strength: learning beyond the classroom. With laboratories, prototyping facilities, research projects and startups on campus, students gain experience by building, testing and innovating.

He suggested that universities across India could draw from this model by placing greater emphasis on experiential learning, research, industry collaboration, and entrepreneurship.

She paused her career to put her family first. Years later, it was her son who reminded her that dreams don't come with an expiry date.

At IIT Madras' convocation, 45-year-old Jigisha Tailor and her 21-year-old son Aditya Kapadia walked onto the stage as fellow graduates after completing the institute's online Data Science programme.

Jigisha had spent 16 years teaching electronics before leaving her job in 2019 to focus on family. In 2022, encouraged by Aditya, she returned to the classroom as a student.

While balancing household responsibilities, she woke up at 4:30 am to study, and the mother-son duo even shared a friendly rivalry over grades.

Their journey is a beautiful reminder that learning has no age limit, and sometimes, the people we raise become the ones who help us rise again. 📷
