On this Memorial Day Weekend, my heart turns once again to Lance Corporal Ryan T. McCaughn.

Nineteen years old. Full of life, quick with a joke, and carrying that quiet courage so many young Marines possessed. I served alongside him in the streets of Ramadi, Iraq. One of the most dangerous places on Earth at the time. We patrolled together, watched each other’s backs, and faced the unknown every single day.

On November 7, 2006, an IED ended his life in an instant. I was there. I saw the blast that took him from us. In that moment, the war became permanently real in a way no training could ever prepare for. A bright, funny, brave young man. A son, a brother, a Marine was gone and nothing would ever be the same.

To his mother, Nicole Cote: I think of you often, especially on days like today. I know no words can fill the emptiness left by losing Ryan, but please know his sacrifice is remembered by those who stood beside him.

He was loved, he was valued, and he will never be forgotten.

Memorial Day isn’t just about the start of summer. It’s about honoring the debt we can never fully repay to those who gave everything so the rest of us could live in freedom.

Ryan gave that ultimate sacrifice. He was willing to walk into hell so others didn’t have to.

Rest easy brother. Semper Fi, Ryan. You are missed every single day.

We mourn the loss of another dedicated officer. @MassStatePolice Trooper Kevin Trainor was tragically killed by a wrong-way driver just moments after finishing his shift. His willingness to serve and protect undoubtedly saved lives, and he will be remembered for his sacrifice.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fiancée during this difficult time.
