Im not necessarily anti-c zoo, I just really think that most people can't actually read nonhuman body language and all that it entails. Its not a black and white situation, and humans need to really be less predatory on nonhumans.
If you unsure you absolutely shouldn't engage.

I heavily disagree with nonhumans being called "pets" as one cannot own sentient life, actual companionship is key

As I said in another reply I had a relationship with a particular feral tomcat before who didn't really rely on anyone for anything, but an astounding number of zoos couldn't say too similar.

@mwolf278 As far as more intimate connection goes, let them take the lead is what I've always done. Though few experiences I've had, I made sure I wasn't initiating.
Let them engage if they want to, leave my body language open the entire time so if they want to disengage they fully could.
