BAND OF BROTHERS (2001) is the kind of television that makes you want to start the entire series again the moment it ends. From the chaos of D-Day to the Bastogne siege, knowing what Easy Company faces never makes those episodes any less gripping.
Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, dug in among these trees north of Bastogne on 20 December 1944. The hollows still run in a line through the Bois Jacques, though nobody can be certain which are the original holes.
The company faced Foy across open fields and held this line through the coldest weeks of the winter. The worst came from German shelling, which burst in the treetops and sprayed fragments down into the positions. On 3 January 1945 Joe Toye was caught in the open. Bill Guarnere ran out to drag him clear and was hit by the next shell. Both men lost their right leg.
Today we walked the Easy Company line with a group of four from the Netherlands.
The holes are still here. A line of foxholes runs along the edge of the Bois Jacques where Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, dug in on 20 December 1944.
The 101st Airborne had reached Bastogne the day before, short of ammunition, winter clothing and, in many cases, entrenching tools. Easy Company took its place on the northern perimeter facing Foy, with Dog and Fox Companies on its flanks. The men dug into frozen ground with helmets and bayonets and roofed the holes with branches and doors pulled from Foy.
The Germans never launched a full assault on this sector. They shelled it instead. Tree bursts sent splinters and steel down into open holes, and the cold did the rest. Frostbite and trench foot took more men than bullets. On 3 January 1945 a barrage in these woods took a leg each from Joe Toye and Bill Guarnere, Guarnere hit while dragging Toye to cover.
These are the same woods, and the line is where Easy Company held it. Whether every hole you see is the one dug in December 1944, and by whom, is something nobody can say with certainty after 81 years.

25 years ago today Band of Brothers aired, wow!
From watching it in awe, to collecting my first few props to building this page and making freinds with so many cast, crew, extras, fans and easy company family members,
Eisenhower during the most stressful hours of his life. He has postponed the invasion until 6 June this morning due to disastrous weather. A journalist notes he is "bowed down with worry...as though each of the four stars on either shoulder weighed a ton." @WWIIMemorial
