This is Stan Larkin. He spent 555 days with no heart in his body. He wore a backpack 24/7 that pumped blood through his body to keep him alive. In 2016 he finally received a heart transplant.
Stan suffered from genetic heart disease. In November 2014, he went to the hospital and had his heart removed.
But instead of having a new heart transplanted, he received an artificial heart that would be strapped to his back in a backpack.
Stan was then discharged from the hospital without a heart in his body and managed to live a normal life for more than a year.
He even managed to play light sports with his friends during that time, carrying his artificial heart in his backpack.
But in 2016, at age 25, Stan received a new human heart.
@iconicjuddy @Morbidful Hi! I worked in cardiac research at Umich during this time. Patients with artificial hearts and VADS typically did sponge baths and caretakers washed their hair for them.
if we’ve brought back global pandemics, titanic disasters, railroad strikes, a King of England and Russian coups, we should also get to bring back the parts of the 20th century where they had cocaine in the soda and a minimum wage earner could buy a family home
