Someone said that Spain should now be called “Spine” - after its decision to bar the United States from using Spanish bases against Iran, despite being a NATO ally of Washington in 1982.

By that logic Modi should be called Spine-less.

You can disagree with the Iranian regime – as Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has made clear. But disagreement is no licence to shred international law or the rules-based order.

A unilateral strike to assassinate the sovereign authority of a country is illegal. Spain had the courage to say so – and to act accordingly.

We are not a part of NATO. We have no obligation whatsoever, as a sovereign nation, to rally around the USA.

But Modi likes to be a free performer in someone else’s circus. And in the process, he’s diminishing India’s stature on the global stage.
