He was a farmer, poet, novelist, essayist, and conservationist who spent decades writing about stewardship, agriculture, rural communities, and our responsibility to the land. His body of work earned him the National Humanities Medal.

His writing called Americans back to stewardship, community, and a deeper relationship with the land.
