Jefferson Davis and James Zachariah George

Jefferson Davis (Bronze, National Statuary Hall, 1931) served as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Mississippi, U.S. Secretary of War, and was the only President of the Confederate States of America. He died in New Orleans on December 6, 1889.

James Zachariah George (Bronze, Capitol Visitor Center, 1931), known as Mississippi’s “Great Commoner,” served as a Confederate colonel, Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, and U.S. Senator (1881–1897). He helped shape the Sherman Antitrust Act and supported the creation of the Department of Agriculture. He died in Mississippi City on August 14, 1897.

Both statues were sculpted by Augustus Lukeman.

Joseph Wheeler and Helen Keller

Joseph Wheeler (Bronze, National Statuary Hall, 1925) was a Confederate lieutenant general nicknamed “Fighting Joe,” regarded by Robert E. Lee as one of the two outstanding Confederate cavalry commanders. After the war he became a planter, lawyer, and long-serving U.S. Representative from Alabama who worked to heal North-South divisions. He later served as a major general of volunteers in the Spanish-American War and as a brigadier general in the U.S. Army during the Philippine Insurrection. He died in Brooklyn, New York, on January 25, 1906.

Helen Keller (Bronze, Capitol Visitor Center, 2009) was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and lost her sight and hearing at 19 months. With teacher Annie Sullivan she learned to communicate, graduated from Radcliffe College, and became a world-renowned author, lecturer, and advocate for the disabled, women’s suffrage, and social causes. She died in Westport, Connecticut, on June 1, 1968.

The Helen Keller statue replaced Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry, a former Confederate officer, U.S. congressman, and educator.

The Wheeler statue was sculpted by Berthold Nebel. The Keller statue was sculpted by Edward Hlavka.

Richard III is the last king of England to die in battle, and thanks to the discovery of his skeleton in 2012, we now know almost exactly how it happened, blow by blow. It was not a clean or noble death. It was a frantic, savage killing of a man swarmed under and hacked apart, and the bones tell the story more honestly than any chronicle.

The end came when Richard gambled everything on a cavalry charge straight at his rival Henry Tudor, drove to within a sword's length of him, and was then cut off as Sir William Stanley's fresh troops crashed in against him. Richard's horse foundered in boggy ground, and the king was pulled down into a press of enemies on foot. Offered a horse to flee, tradition says he refused, and chose to die fighting where he stood.

Then they were on him. Forensic analysis of his skeleton by the University of Leicester found around eleven wounds, nine of them to the head, and the pattern tells you he had lost his helmet before the killing blows landed. Two of those head wounds were catastrophic and either would have killed him. One was a massive sharp-force injury to the base of the skull, most likely from a halberd or similar staff weapon, that sliced clean through and took off a section of bone, exposing the brain. Another was a blade driven up through the base of the skull and deep into the head. A sword or dagger point also punched through the top of the skull into the brain. He was, in effect, having his head hacked open from several directions at once by men crowding in to claim the kill.

What the wounds do not show is any sign of him defending himself in his last moments with his arms, because his body armour was still protecting his limbs. It was the head, once bared, that they went for. The picture the bones paint is of a king overwhelmed and brought low, then struck again and again in a matter of seconds by multiple attackers, exactly the death you would expect for a man surrounded and unhorsed in the middle of the enemy.

And the brutality did not stop when he died. Several injuries appear to have been inflicted after death, humiliations rather than combat wounds, including a blade thrust up through his buttock, almost certainly delivered as an insult while his stripped, naked corpse was slung over the back of a horse to be carried from the field and put on display. The last Plantagenet king, who had worn the crown of England, was butchered in the mud, degraded in death, and thrown into an unmarked grave. Five centuries later his battered skull, with every one of those wounds still legible in the bone, would prove that the grim old accounts of his end had been telling the truth all along.

On this day in 1775, King George III crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

He put out his “Proclamation for Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition.” With that order he called the American colonies an open and avowed rebellion, labeled their leaders traitors, and told every civil and military officer in the empire to crush them without mercy. Anyone caught helping or even writing to the colonists was to be hunted down and punished.

This wasn’t just some legal paperwork. It was the moment the British Crown formally abandoned any path of reconciliation. The Second Continental Congress had just sent the Olive Branch Petition in a last desperate bid for peace. George III refused even to receive it. By branding an entire people rebels, he made loyalty to the king and defense of American liberty mutually exclusive. From then on the only real options left were submit or fight for independence.

What the king intended as a death sentence for the rebellion instead became its birth certificate. The proclamation hardened the resolve across the colonies, silenced the remaining moderates and set the stage for the Declaration of Independence less than a year later. A single sheet of parchment, sealed at St. James’s helped turn 13 provinces into a new nation.

And here’s the irony. The same king who tried to kill liberty with a stroke of the pen ended up forging a Republic that would outlast his entire empire.

🇬🇧 Two Afghan migrants have been convicted of raping a woman while holding a knife to her date's throat.

The woman was on a first date with a man in London’s Barking Park on 16 August 2025, stargazing while the man played a guitar.

Two Afghan migrants, Khan Agah and Noorullah Ahmdzai, approached the couple and pinned the woman down saying “they just wanted to have some fun with her”.

Ahmdzai, 26, raped her while Agah held a Swiss Army-type knife to her date's throat, threatening to kill him if he tried to call the police before the pair switched roles.

Prosecutors said the woman was suffocated during the 'petrifying and awful' sex attack 'which left her numb'.

Khan Agah and Noorullah Ahmdzai lied to the court, saying the woman agreed to have sex with them for £20 and accused them of rape when she didn't get more money.

Agah also lied about his age, saying he was 16 at the time of the rape. He is 19.

Ahmdzai came to Britain on a small boat in August 2023 and lived at a taxpayer-funded hotel.

Agah also arrived illegally, but when and how remains unknown.
