WHERE THOMAS TUCHEL WENT WRONG
Thomas Tuchel deserves credit for taking England to the World Cup semi-finals. Before the tournament, many questioned whether this squad could even make a deep run. But football is ultimately judged by the biggest moments, and against Argentina, Tuchel got those moments wrong.
The turning point came immediately after England took the lead. Instead of continuing to attack, England retreated. Tuchel switched to a more defensive setup and invited Argentina onto them. Against an ordinary team, that approach might have worked. Against Lionel Messi, it was asking for punishment.
The substitution of Declan Rice completely changed the game. Rice had been controlling the midfield, breaking up attacks and giving England an outlet whenever they were under pressure. Once he left the pitch, England lost their composure. Argentina dominated possession, camped in England's half and never looked back.
Tuchel also deserves criticism for his squad selection. Leaving behind creative players like Cole Palmer and Phil Foden always looked like a gamble. When England desperately needed someone to keep the ball or produce a moment of quality, there wasn't enough creativity available.
The use of Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke was equally frustrating. England needed pace to push Argentina backwards and relieve the pressure, yet they never fully committed to that plan. Instead, they accepted wave after wave of Argentine attacks.
Football is decided by fine margins, but this defeat wasn't simply about Argentina being brilliant.
England abandoned the aggressive, front-foot football that brought them this far. Tuchel was hired to make England fearless in the biggest moments.
Against Argentina, he blinked first.
And against Messi, that's all it takes.
