Long prayer is actually very easy.

People say, “You need special grace to pray for a long time.”
I terribly doubt it.

Give someone a deadline they cannot afford to miss.
Put them in police custody for a serious crime they did not commit.
Let their child be in danger.
Let their business be collapsing.

Suddenly, they can pray for three days.

Nobody needs to motivate them.
Nobody needs to organize a prayer meeting.
Nobody needs to teach them how to “travail”.

You don’t necessarily need special grace to pray long. Sometimes, you just need sufficient problems.

But forgiveness?

That one is different.

Try forgiving someone who falsely accused you.
Someone who broke an agreement with you.
Someone who abandoned you.
Someone who cheated you.
Someone who went behind your back and stole from you.
Someone you were kind to, who forgot your kindness and switched sides.
A loved one who decided to become a foe.
A friend who suddenly distanced themselves without explanation or closure.

You see forgiveness?

That one needs grace.

Because forgiveness is not merely saying, “I choose to let it go because I’m the bigger person.”

Forgiveness is choosing to obey God when your feelings are giving you every reason not to.

Jesus said:

“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.”
— Matthew 5:44

And when Jesus taught His disciples about forgiving repeatedly, their response was remarkable:

“Lord, increase our faith.”
— Luke 17:5

They understood something.

Some instructions require faith.

It takes faith to believe that God can defend you without you becoming bitter.
It takes faith to leave vengeance in God’s hands.
It takes faith to keep your heart clean when someone has treated you dirty.

It takes faith to continue choosing love when someone has chosen hostility.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence” (Proverbs 4:23).

Your heart is too valuable to become a storage room for somebody else’s offense.

So I don’t just want the grace to pray longer.

Lord, increase my faith to forgive.
Increase my faith to love.
Increase my faith to bless.
Increase my faith to pray for those who hurt me.
Increase my faith to keep my heart free from hate.

Because true maturity is not demonstrated by how loudly I can pray against my enemies.

It is demonstrated by how completely I can obey God in the presence of them.

Lord, ‘increase our faith’.

Amen.
