People living with NCDs in humanitarian settings face multiple challenges simultaneously. Often, disruptions in care and the supply of medicines can become life-threatening.
In her blog for the Global Week for Action, Sylvia Khamati Anekha shares her experience from the @danskrodekors and how the organisation, alongside local partners and with the support of @novonordiskfond, is taking the lead on NCDs by strengthening continuity of care in crisis settings in East Africa.
✍️"Continuity of care cannot be viewed as an additional health activity introduced after the emergency phase has passed. It must be integrated into preparedness, response, and recovery efforts from the beginning," writes Khamati Anekha.

In every community, celebration is strongest when people are healthy enough to fully take part in it.
This Eid al-Adha, we are reminded that investing in health systems, prevention, and equitable care is ultimately an investment in people, families, and moments that matter.
Eid Mubarak from NCD Alliance East Africa 🌙

🗨️ “Leadership is measured by implementation, not promises. The global NCD response has moved from commitments to delivery. Real leadership now means funded national plans, measurable action, and equitable progress in prevention, treatment and care,” remarked NCD Alliance President Leslie Rae Ferat during the closing session at #WorldHeartSummit 2026 taking place ahead of #WHA79.
🗨️ Hyvelle Ferguson-Davis, Founder of HeartSistas, emphasised that policymakers must better understand the day-to-day realities of living with NCDs, particularly for people in vulnerable communities who face misdiagnosis and delayed care.
🗨️Dr Bente Mikkelsen, Director of Global Engagement Strategies at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Chair of the Advocacy Committee at the World Heart Federation, said countries already know many of the cost-effective interventions needed to improve #hypertension care, but must now invest in delivering them at scale.
🗨️ Prof. Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, addressed the challenge of integrating new NCD targets into health systems already managing a high burden of infectious diseases and other pressures. “Targets don’t save lives, implementation does,” he said.
👏 The session was co-hosted with the @worldheartfed and moderated by journalist Shiulie Ghosh.

At the official #WHA79 side event “Ultra-Processed Foods and Human Health: Evidence, Policies and Global Action,” NCDA President Leslie Rae called for urgent action to address ultra-processed foods as a major driver of NCDs.
🗨️ “This is not a matter of individual choice; it is a systemic failure. We must shift the paradigm from blaming the consumer to regulating the food environment,” said Leslie.
Speaking on behalf of the NCD Alliance, Leslie called for stronger public regulation — including fiscal policies, marketing restrictions to protect children, mandatory front-of-package labelling, healthier public procurement, and safeguards against industry interference.
🤝 The event was co-organised by Brazil, France, Mexico, Uruguay and Bloomberg Philanthropies

As we navigate funding challenges and global health reform, person-centred, integrated care must be rights-based, community-led and sustainably financed.

Honored to share that our Chairperson, Prof. Joseph Mucumbitsi, represented Rwanda NCD Alliance at the World Health Summit 2026 in Nairobi 🇰🇪.
Earlier today, he joined the panel on Integrated Planetary Health Solutions to Safeguard Health, hosted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with a theme ''Climate-resilient and green health infrastructure: innovation, financing models, air pollution, waste management and sustainable cities''.
Prof. Mucumbitsi highlighted Rwanda’s innovative Kigali Car Free Day model—demonstrating how healthier, sustainable cities can be built through improved air quality, increased physical activity, and reduced NCD risk factors.
We are proud to see Rwanda’s experience contributing to global dialogue on climate‑resilient and green health infrastructure.

Trade cannot improve livelihoods if it promotes products that advance negative health to the population.
Regulations on trade must be centred on health & well-being. We recognize the DG’s remarks for her consciousness of the value of life above other values that cause harm.

Dr Ngozi Okonji-Iweala, said in the opening remarks that what drove her to run for office is the WTO’s mission to improve livelihoods.
This is almost being overrun by the challenges the organization faces, challenges that must be fixed which is true.
