25.08.26 Ulaanbaatar COP17 Water Day.
This COP's opportunity: water, soil, land, agriculture, rangelands all converge here. This is the moment to elevate drought from an environmental concern to a global economic and security priority.
Water and drought issues aren’t just water, agriculture, and environment ministries’ issues. Finance, energy, trade, and infrastructure must factor in water risks too. Drought begins locally, but it never stays local. A water shock becomes a food shock, an energy shock, a trade shock, and finally an economic and security shock. COP17 should be the moment we stop responding to drought as an emergency and start investing in resilience before the crisis hits.
Great leadership recognises the gaps that must be filled to achieve ambitious goals.
That is the message behind AU Commissioner @MosesVilakati call for greater investment in Africa's Great Green Wall.

I was honoured to deliver remarks at the High-Level Side Event, “Restoring African Landscapes, Restoring Hope,” at #COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. @Cop17Mongolia
I underscored that Africa’s Great Green Wall is ready to move from ambition to investment, and from investment to impact.
Restoring our landscapes is not only an environmental priority, it is an economic, social and security imperative. By investing in land, water, communities and resilience, we are investing in Africa’s future.
The African Union remains committed to scaling the Great Green Wall as a truly continental, integrated and transformative initiative, working with Member States, partners, investors and communities.
Let us transform ambition into investment, investment into action, and action into lasting resilience and prosperity for Africa. 🌍🌱

Pleased to deliver remarks at the session on “Great Green Wall of Africa: Mobilizing Resources & Partners for a Continental Scale-up” during #UNCCDCOP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. @Cop17Mongolia
The Great Green Wall is more than a restoration initiative, it is a continental ambition for resilient landscapes, sustainable livelihoods, food security and stronger communities across Africa.
Scaling up this vision requires stronger partnerships, coordinated action and sustained investment to move from ambition to impact across the continent.
Together, we can mobilize the resources and partnerships needed to accelerate the Great Green Wall of Africa and advance a greener, more resilient and prosperous Africa. 🌍🌱

@amcowafrica@cheikhtdieye On the sidelines of the African Water and Sanitation Systems Symposium in Kigali, I met with H.E. Tiémoko Traoré, Minister of Energy and Water of the Republic of Mali.
Platforms such as these are essential for leaders & development partners to speak with one voice
@RwandaInfra
On the sidelines of #AfricaWaterLeadership in Kigali, I held discussions with @amcowafrica President H.E. Dr. @cheikhtdieye, Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation of Senegal, on sustaining water and sanitation as a continental priority beyond the AU’s 2026 Theme of the Year.
As we implement the AU Theme of the Year 2026 and the Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy, we must strengthen water governance, invest in human capital & technology, improve data and information systems, and mobilise greater investment
