High placed sources in Kandahar and kabul says Taliban supreme leader Sheikh Hibatullah Akhundzada was furious after learning that his order to shut down Afghanistan’s fiber optic internet system had been “ reversed” . According to individuals familiar with the matter, the reclusive leader was “shocked and deeply distressed” by the move. During a meeting with his close aides in Kandahar yesterday, Sheikh Hibatullah reportedly declared: “Restoring the fiber optics is like holding the funeral of our my Islamic Sharia system.” Sources said he posed a pointed question in front of Mawlavi Zafrani and his advisor Mufti Abdul Hakim—a graduate of Darul Uloom Karachi and a special student of Mufti Abdul Rahim of the same seminary—asking whether “any difference remains between the Western Republic and the Islamic Emirate.” Meanwhile, in Kabul, Taliban leaders and ministers who had lobbied to reverse Hibatullah’s decision are now said to be discussing cautiously ways to challenge another of Shaikh Haibatullah controversial decrees—the nationwide ban on women’s education.
