Restaurants need to urgently revisit their policies on tipping and more importantly, how tips are distributed.
The pooling system is clearly not favoured by waiters. It dilutes individual effort and removes any real sense of reward for good service. Equally problematic is the practice of withholding tips until month-end. For many waiters, tips are their day-to-day survival money for transport, food and immediate household needs.
It has become increasingly common to see waiters asking patrons to send tips via eWallet. That alone should signal that the current system is broken. When workers have little to no control over the disbursement of money that was given directly for their service, something is fundamentally wrong.
As patrons who understand the value of tipping, we also have a role to play. Let us not forget to carry and withdraw cash. It remains the most direct and dignified way to ensure tips reach the people they are meant for.
PS. My mother was a petrol attendant. I was raised on tips. I know exactly what tips do and how they sustain families.
